Metallica's Death Magnetic is absolutely disgusting!

Apparently they received the mixes with a limiter on them, which would probably explain why the whole thing is ridiculously distorted. I just can't believe how a band with the kinda budget that Metallica possesses would have such poor production that they would shove a limiter on the mixes before shipping off to the mastering house.

FWIW... The best sounding rock album is the stuff they recorded for Garage Inc in IMO, which makes it all the more frustrating that Metallica suck so much these days.

I remember seeing an interview with the mastering engineer (Ted Jensen?) saying how he completely disowned his work on the entire project.

Any other ridiculously overcooked masters around that you guys can think of?

we don't know what the original recordings sound like so how can we judge how good or bad a job the mastering engineer did?

If you're gonna go looking for bad in the world, you'll surely find it.

Focus on something productive.
