Stuck meters

I haven't checked into the big famous pop music scene for a few months, so I thought I better see how people are mixing now. I brought I tunes over to my rig, and saw the meters and thought I must have something plugged in wrong because they were just stuck at one level. I figured I had some feedback going on or something (I didn't have monitors on yet).

But then I fooled around a little and realized that was the music! I remembered I had my meters set to hold for a second, so I switched the peak hold off. But they still barely moved. I realize this is old news, but when you haven't actually seen or heard it for awhile, it is pretty funny.

If your meters are calibrated for mixing (somewhere in the neighborhood of 0VU = -18dBFS) then mastered songs will look very hot on those meters. If they're calibrated for mastering or just for listening to mastered mixes (somewhere in the neighborhood of 0VU = -8dBFS) you should see some movement.

Thanks Greg. That's cool. I was commenting though on the fact that it looked almost flatline - and sounded like it. In comparison to something recorded maybe fifteen to twenty years ago, where you can see and hear the patient actually breathing.
