Thread Starter | Thank you Mr. Bob Katz
First of all, I'm new in this forum maybe since 6 months ago... I just wanna say Thank you to Mr.Katz because he's always available to answer the questions of everybody.
I recently received the last "Mastering Audio, The art and the science" (Second Edition) of Bob Katz. I suggest to the people who still not have the book to buy it. It's the completest book I ever had. This is helping me as much on the technical aspect than the global approach to have when I start to Master an album.
I started in the Mastering at 19. I'm now 22 and it's unbelievable how much people arround me in the musical industry who supposed to be "professionnal" don't know exactly what is Mastering.
Once again, thank you Bob Katz for giving me more tools for my Mastering session and now, I am trustful when I am explaining my job.

I second a "thank you" to Mr. Katz. Both here and on the Samplitude/Sequoia forum he is as nice as can be, and freely gives any advice at any time! Thank you sir.

...and a "same here" from me - I got the first edition and dip into it all the time, finding new things or re-learning things I already "knew".
It carefully debunks a number of erroneous "common knowledge" practices that never sat right with me: peak-normalising song-by-song, or tracking as close to 0 dB FS so as not to waste any bits, for example. I was impressed at how thorough his treatment of the digital domain is - it's really a different beast from analog in so many ways.
The inclusion of the fold-out Carnegie Hall chart inside the front cover (showing the relationships between notes, frequencies, instruments, etc.) says a lot: you can tell he always has the impact of/on the music in mind when he's discussing the technicalities. Especially great stuff on monitor setup and calibration, the K-System of course, jitter, dither, DSP losses, dynamics, EQ, and radio-readiness. Important things for tracking and mixing, not just mastering.
Thank you, Mr Katz.

Yes, thankyou Mr Katz, easily my favourite book of all time. Nice one! Will be purchasing a new Carnegie chart to get framed for my studio at some point soon.

Very nice when I corrosponded with him recnetly.
Not going to get all teary eyed about it, because "art and science" is only one persons opinion, but it's often brought out on ear rests at Subsequent

Yes indeed! Thank you Mr. Katz. And yes, it is "Art & Science" and everyone has their own understanding and opinions, however, Mr. Katz has a way of explaining and delivering his knowledge and experience that makes me trust him, and his opinions. Going from years of analog only to digital (DAW) about two years ago, Bob's book helped me immensely.

Bob Katz for President!
Seriously, I appreciate people who are willing to spread knowlege. I try to do it myself, but not in a mastering setting, for the most part.

I'm not running! Speaking of spreading knowledge, the previous poster, JJ (Jim Johnston) will be spreading his knowledge in several workshops at the NY AES convention this fall. Hope to see him (and you all!) there! I'll be on a workshop on the last day (Monday) about the loudness wars, with several nice participants, including Bob Ludwig.
Take care and so many thanks for your support, hope I don't trip up!
Bob

Bob | I had the privilege of working with Bob on some projects at Chesky Records back in the 90s. He is a terrific guy and this book only hints at the depth of his knowledge. He also has a very good sense of humor. This book is simply essential reading.
Great to see you are on this board Bob.

As to "TURN IT DOWN" I would only add to the phrase "turn it down" a word suggesting that I am wishing for a deity to condemn something.
I suggest you hit Bob's workshop. You already know about memory levels, etc, I think. If not, I can give you the 3 minute version, and my part of that presentation will become clear, and without a comb filter in sight.

After the workshop, I'll try to get Rick Chinn to put the deck for it (as well as some others) up at PowerPoint Presentations from recent (or not so recent) meetings. alongside the rest of my tutorial decks.

| Mastering Audio is a great book! The content is great but I also very much enjoy the layout and illustrations.
Plus the horizontal format is wonderful; it stays open and doesn't collapse (shut? sorry, not a native speaker ;-)) when it lies on the table.
Thought out through and through :-)

Yes, thank you Bob.
A few months ago I bought his book after reading it I decided to do just mastering.
He is always open to answer questions, no words to thank him.
If in the future I get my clients are happy with my work, it will be thanks to Bob.

It is a pity he is no longer here.
Some of the best advising concerning mastering was taken from him.

I am about to buy this book and was wondering if there are any major differences in the first and second editions?

Third edition should be out soon. I'd hang on for that. I have the first and the second edition. There are a few differences, but nothing that would require owning both.

Cheers,

Nope, no idea, just going on what Bob said in that SquareCad podcast a while back. Maybe Eric knows more?
