Steep LPF in mastering?

Every once and a while I'll load some great sounding albums into PT to listen and check out some analyzers, etc. One thing I noticed a few times was what seems to be an extremely steep LPF around 15 or 16k. Noticed this on the latest Nickelback disc as well as some hardcore/metal releases.
I've never heard this talked about before so I'm curious as to the reasons behind it. My guess would be to combat nasty HF artifacts when doing a lot of clipping... anyone familiar with this technique?

did you load a WAV ripped from cd, or an mp3?
mp3 encoders include filters.
