Thread Starter | 1-bit DSD and DSP operations
Is it possible to apply dynamic compression (in any shape or form) to a DSD signal? Also, what DSP operations can be applied to a DSD signal without having to be converted to some multibit signal in the process? I understand DSD signals can be cut, joined together, but what else? Thanks for your knowledge. |

Pyramix can process dsd with plug ins, but any crossfade is done in dxd.. I'm sure someone with more detailed knowledge will chime in.. huub |

It was my understanding that ALL processing other than basic editing had to be done in a multi-bit format. You can't perform simple addition or subtraction with a 1-bit signal without destroying it. Addition, subtraction and delay is the basis for all DSP. I know somebody here will disagree with me but all the software I've seen that claims to do DSD converts to PCM to do all it's processing and converts back to DSD upon output. |

What DSD does it does very well. Leave all of the processing for your high end analogue gear anyways. That's how they did it when albums used to have huge depth and extremely wide sound stages, can ya dig?

Thanks. I'm not a pro equipment user or ME myself, but an enthusiast wanting to know and understand DSD a lot more. I'm not looking for opinions on what you should or shouldn't do with DSD (even though that's good advice, bcgood) but rather, straight info on what you CAN do with DSD. E.g. can you increase the level of the signal in the 1-bit domain (if you really wanted to)? I might very well ask for some insight over at the merging forum too, thanks for the suggestion... |
