Do you swap L/R to check your mix/master?

Maybe it sounds like a silly question:

Do you swap L/R to check your mix/master?

Aware of the slight differences in the frequency response of the left and right speaker and impact of room acoustics (if the room and its objects are not exactly symmetrical) I started to do that. Also the ears of somebody might not hear exactly equally well, make the telephone test. So for fine adjustments of levels of rather hard panned mix elements I find it useful. I try to make the original and the flipped mix to sound equally well, because every good commercial recording
will sound good in both cases.

What do you think?

Until now, no monitor controller supports this function.

Nothing particularly wrong with that... Not much else to say though.

It makes sense to me. I do it in mixing sometimes. The more asymmetrical the mix itself is, the more I want to eliminate the other variables (gear, room, ears) every now and then by flipping L/R. Gives a nice fresh perspective.
Indeed, it should work both ways, and if it stops working when you flip L/R surely the mix is not quite done yet..
It is a mystery to me why this is not a standard feature on pro monitoring controllers.

Go for it. For mastering I personally don't feel the need.

I have a L<>R button on my mastering console. It's the least used function, but I'm sometimes glad it's there.

This doesn't exactly make sense to me in a psycho-acoustical sense. I just like certain sounds for the right brain more than the left brain & vice versa. Just my 2 cents

I understand. But its important to understand why this is the case. Maybe you are right-handed and someone else left-handed and likes the elements the other way round.

The only thing I know is that country music is often made for truck drivers, and there it's important on which side the driver sits.

Yeah I have thought about this. Like maybe some mixes done in europe should be swapped L and R to get a closer perspective when in the car.

Same here, I use the L/R swap function once in a while on my Danfield Monitor2, though mostly when mixing.

I use the M/S Diff function more.

I was the one who asked for the L/R swap feature on the Danfield, which is one of the reasons why I'm standing in that picture with serial # 0001. ;-)

Highly recommended monitor controller by the way! Well suited for mastering and at a very reasonable price, just above $2,000 (excluding VAT) for a limited introduction period. Impeccable sound, perfect tracking at all volume levels, reference level (toggable individual reference volume which is a must-have for mastering), difference (M/S), L/R swap, etc. And it doesn't hurt that the remote looks very stylish.
