Test and Compare problem

Need a little help from audio cd burning expert.

Never had a problem. Then a new PC. Samplitude when running test and compare almost always shows something like 36000 errors in a test an compare for a cd burn.

Got a new drive, same type. same problem.
Tried 4 kinds of cd media - same problem.
Tried removing effects, dithering prior to write stage. same problem.
Turned off all gain impacting effects and wrote quiet material. same problem.

Moved to a different version of samplitude on different machine w different drive. no problem.

The drive in question is an IOmagic dvd +- r/rw dual format double layer. No driver required or available.

The test and compare function simply reads the disk and compares byte by byte to a cache of what was written.

All CD's sound fine despite reported errors. Any Clues?? I can't exactly ignore the problem when I am making cd's for duplication. Samplitude "support" is clueless or nonresponsive or both.

Are you burning "on the fly" or generating a new file...?

If the former, try the latter.

I use Samp's own tester too, and while it's OK for a quick-n-dirty check, it's not reliable. I have once found a C2 with Plextools that the Samplitude missed. That's why I check with both..

Sounds like burning on the fly to me, too.

Chances are your drive has problems doing accurate audio extraction - as a bare minimum you need a drive that can flag C2 errors so that the software knows that there is a problem. You also need to use a drive that has a predictable offset when writing and reading audio - otherwise you could simply be seeing the result of the wrong (or no) offset correction.

Cheers

James.

Thanks guys

I was burning on the fly but tried making an entire file and that had the same issue. I am now thinking it has something to do with that drive on that machine + offset reading. Does anyone have a drive suggestion? (I see several posts with suggestions but, knowing the issue I have, perhaps you have a different suggestion.) Thanks a bunch. t.

The Plextor Premium2 is the closest that you will get to a drive specifically designed for audio mastering. It is still available through Amazon in Europe although it is harder to find in North America for some reason.

Cheeers

Samplitude (and Sequoia) only perform a data integrity check, and I've also found that it doesn't work with some drives. Bitched about it on the forum a few times....no real response.

Burn errors have to be detected with another program (disc speed, plextools), so these are two different issues.

My guess is that Nero will perform a null test just fine with that drive, and it's indeed a Magix issue.

I have my answer

Bought a different brand of drive (Pioneer). This was Sata not ide. All problems went away. It was either a read offfset issue with the IO magic drive, as theorized here, or something to do with an old ide bus on a very modern backplane. So, thanks gearslutz. btw I tried to find someone selling the plextor drive and it was very difficult. ted.
