Can you tell me why??

why are small "monitor" type loudspeakers used for mixing??The main advantage of a floorstander is that the increased internal volume can be used to either extend the bass or improve the efficiency or both. For example, my current speakers, Audio Kinesis Jazz Modules have roughly four cubic feet internal volume. In comparison, a stand-mount of one cubic foot internal volume would either have 2/3 octave less bass, or 6 dB lower efficiency, or some combination thereof. If we're comparing equal-dollar speakers, the more expensive box and greater shipping costs work against the floorstander such that an equal-dollar standmount will probably have better quality drivers and/or better crossover parts. But the efficiency/bass extension advantage of the bigger box remains...so...why? I mean...I guess size/placement constraints factor in, but it would seem to me , from a performance standpoint, that full range/Floorstanding speakers have the upper-hand..

so why are these small "monitor" speakers such a standard?? why would anyone even want to use them?

I blame the trend on misguided efforts to "tune" control room mains speakers in the '70s and '80s. The result was people getting better translation with NS-10s and no longer trusting the "big speakers."

Let's not forget about the ubiquitous 1031A... favored big console-toppers to this day.

(that wasn't intended to be a poem, but it kind of is)

I think for mixing loud and "feeling" the music you need near fields and/or traditional mains. I don't see how even monster towers would integrate with a console, but in the DAW age... why not?

Most mixing and tracking rooms have small, mid, big. Some other past classic mids: jbl 4311 and tannoy's red and gold dual-concentric, altec
