Loosing the oomf

Hey, i'm a mastering amature, profesional recorder (yeah i'm a tape machine) and mixer.

I'm wanting to master my own tracks cuz they're for my own sake really, but i'm having the problem of really loosing the clarity in the low end verses the volume pump.

I like to hear an Andy Wallace style kick and it's the kick in particular that seems to be sucked away when I puch the gain up to a brack wall.

I've tested the waves L series and really didn't like how they squanshed my mix. i think the Sonnox inflater is a little better to my ear (or mixes) and i don't think the digidesign maxim is all that bad either but with all i have that kick drum problem.

Any tips? can some clever EQ isolate it? Anything I should maybe look at in the mix for myself or even someone else to master more efficiantly?

You need to get yourself some serious outboard, serious converters and a shed load of experience!
Or, take it to another pair of ears!

Well, you're hitting your mixes with a bunch of snare vampiers and wondering why you can't get the same balls that a serious mastering eng can get.
You then start another thread asking if mastering is really necessary?

Dude!
You've just answered your own question!

My advise to you is to get your mixes so they sound absolutely killer and don't be worrying about volume.
It's highly possible that your mixes are not actually ready yet, and when they are, you probably won't wanna hear em for a while.

That's where another pair of ears comes in!

Totally! If you were a professional mixer, you would have mixed enough tracks to have learned the massive benefits good mastering WILL offer. And table of tones' (sorry i dont know your name mate advice was more than an adequate answer for your question, apart from he missed out...a serious room ; )

Someone else mentioned it, but I will re-cap. Buy Bob Katz book & Read it thoroughly. Read it as many times as it takes for everything to be absorbed.

You need to find the frequency where the kick hits (try around 45 hz and then move up and down the freq range till it really hits you). I recommend a narrow Q when doing this and a bunch of gain on that band. When you find it, back off the gain till it sounds right. The slap of the kick will need to be found up around 2K. Give it a shot.

Mastering your own mixes, and especially your own producitons is one of the hardest things you can do...believe me I've tried and it's very hard to get good results. After you've heard something over and over it's tough to get a different perspective on it. Saying that I've done it many times for various reasons!

well thank you for anyone who gave advise and to others, why do you bother replying?

I'm looking for a few tips to get my personal songs on my ipod quickly. i don't want to spend money because very few people hear them. i just like to get a bit of volume to match the rest of my ipod.

When i do propper mixes, professionally, they are mastered better than i can do. i like mastering, i think it can be really helpful. Anyone getting confused with the "is mastering still nessercary" post is getting the wrong idea from the purpose of that topic.

anyway, consider this closed
