Limiter output level

I am working on a project now and use the elephant limiter to feed the L2. I have set the output on the L2 to 0.0 and am not getting any overs. Is there a chance that this can cause problems when the artist takes the CD to the replication plant of causing an error? In the past I set the output at -0.2.

Can cause probs with some dacs. Many me's set the output ceiling at 0db, but to be on the safe side, anywhere between -0.1 & -0,3 is good.

Whereever it needs to be to make sure there's no ISPs showing in RME digicheck, here.

Elephant goes last here though, no L2.

Indeed, no L2 here either!

Yeah, dowload SSL xism, very reliable free meter for this. Still recommend keeping ceiling at -0,1 or below though.

I've gone back and decreased the output to -0.1 to avoid any potential issues. Thanks for the info guys.

Why would you put an L2 after an Elephant?

The Elephant is the lesser of the two evils but Woah! You're gonna flatten something that's already flattened!

I don't even use a limiter!

Well, the reason I use two limiters is to minimize the artifacts caused by running one limiter too hard. I only do (normally) 3db or less GR out of the L2. It sounds better to me running the elephant into the L2 than vice-versa.

Thanks for that info. I may well start changing the output down to -0.3 on my next project.

I always find it funny that people worry so much about the distortion potential of ISP's, in light of the far worse damage that is already being inflicted upon the recording in the name of loudness.

Don't get me wrong, I lower the output ceilings of my limiters for the same reason. I just think it's ironic.

Yes, it is very ironic Maybe not if your peak catching, but under (ahem) normal 'ridiculousy loud' circumstances, it is a bit of a joke really.

The -0.3 ceiling is actually to prevent the oversampling digital filter in the CD player from internal overload, the actual analog conversion level may be higher (and is unpredictable).
