old school German comp/limiter EMT 156

Originally used in broadcast I believe. I have one that works perfectly. It is extremely transparent and quiet! A bit boring for recording/mixing, but could be the ticket in a mastering setup. It's an early PWM design (aren't the Trakkers modelled on the EMT?)

Anyone have any info on it's useability?

very nice comp !!! it's a little secret weapon in the electronic music scene. most of the time I use it on my main bus before a tc phoenix me, both just doing a little compression.

i'm doing mixing & mastering all in one process as i mix into the compressors so i guess it's quite useful there if you like what it does.

it has some strange things going on, but that is what makes it's sound so unique. i don't know the english word for it, the german word is "übersprechen". that means if you put it on a stereo bus and turn pan fully clockwise you still have like -60db going on on the other side.

i'd say just give it a try, but make sure it really is in good condition because most of them aren't and need to be recaped.

one of the reasons I think there hasn't been much feedback on these here is that every time I've seen one it was in non-working condition and the owners didn't have the means (i.e. couldn't locate parts or didn't have cash) to fix it. If yours is in good shape consider yourself lucky!

Best regards,

Left-right "crosstalk", which, if you think about it, can be a good thing as we don't naturally hear sounds exclusively in one ear or the other. I also believe this is a subtle part of the appeal of vinyl – a degree of 'centeredness'/summing (however inadvertent it may be).

I love the sound but it´s to noisy for mastering IMHO.
