Low end roll off

As a producer, would guys want me to EQ the masterbuss, roll off about up to 20-30hz, before sending it off to mastering? Or do you guys prefer to do it all yourselves? What about at least up to 20?

And while you guys master, do you lpf 19khz-20khz? What do you guys do in that area.

Do what the mix tells you to do.

That's what we're going to do...

This has to be one of the most common questions asked on this board. I don't really get why, I mean I can't imagine a ME going back to the mixer and saying "hey dude, I rolled off below 30Hz and above 19kHz but in the future you should really be doing this yourself."

Of course if it sounds better with low and high passes, then why not - but to me, it makes more sense to let the ME do it seeing as he probably has a better ear and better equipment than you do (else what are you paying him for?).

I think the confusion came when someone ( I think it was a "big" name, one of the Geoffs?) mentioned that they filter EVERYTHING at 50...because the energy was inaudible and ate up headroom?

pretty prominent guy, from what I can recall.

ill dig it up..

If your not sure, leave it off.

If you can't hear anything that's bugging you down there, I would leave the decision up to the ME.

Depending on the eq you would be using. Even though you think that you are only cutting straight away at 20hz the same filter could be effecting other frequencies in an adverse way a little higher up.

Only really do this when it's full of artefacts of bad tracking/bad room sound on recording, especially find this a problem on non close miked Bass Cabs. The other time it is often used is when there is unwanted energy there which is feeding into the compressor and making me not get that extra loud, that is dependant on the style of music though, could never do that on dance music really, unless it was vocal stuff.

well I do a lot of Hip Hop pop and R&B and I can tell you that I would never get a client if I cut off at 50hrtz !!! that's pretty much where the 808 everybody uses resides at. it all depends on your style of music but I'd rather leave it all as the ME CAN ALWAYS CUT BUT CAN'T PUT IT BACK
