M/S use in mastering

hello ME's
don't know if my question can be something generalized..anyway:
when it's about stereo enhancement or similar nice tricks, do you use the M/S EQ function in certain ways? i know what it does and use it myself but some of the pro's out there have typical tricks up their sleeve using cool M/S magic (EQ or/and Comp.)

(yeah i know, i know it depends on the source material)
ok, let's say you have a track that sounds alright and has a stereo image that is "ok" what would you do to get it wider (not using enhancers etc)

hope to read some answers SOOOOON

thanks
M

You can read about them sooner than you think through the magic of the search function

"Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms." link broken?

I'm no pro but lately I discovered a cool trick in nebula and maybe it is used with hardware too?...

anyway, instead of basicly inserting the sampler on the stereo track I decrease the input/increase the output, place 1 on M and 1 on S (can be a tube/preamp/ eq with nothing changed, depends on what suits best for the source). Also adjust the dist. rate to my liking.

Result is you get more of a depth (that actually means sweeter mids-highs) feeling when you want to go loud (or don't want to go loud and keep it there) and push the limiter a db or 2 more without getting a horrible "in your face" thing.

Tryed this on rock and elektronic stuff and proved to be a minor touch that can be useful. Still experimenting...

Hahaha, so much for the magic of the search function

I just searched the mastering forum for 'side channel'. That brings up some useful threads
