Percentage of time ME's work on what ?

I think it would be useful to poll ME's as to what percentage of time they work on what ...

ie. 30 % fixing the bass ... 35 % on compression ... 20 % on getting all tracks even ... that kind of thing.

This might help clients be aware of where most of the problem areas are ... and perhaps lead to better mixes being submitted.

How 'bout it ?

Hi all, as this is my first poll ... its not exactly right as I couldn't figure out how to do the polling choices as percentages ...

Hopefully the poll will still illuminate what ME's spent the majority of their time on (on average).

Thanks all,

jls.

Since every song is different and every mastering session different it is hard to put percentages on what I spend the most time on. To quote an oft quoted phrase. "Do what the music tells you you do...." and don't worry about percentages.

I move through all of those areas during the mastering process. What about aspects like critical and analytical listening, assembly editing, cutting, QC, billing, hanging with the client, etc.? Mastering isn't always about the processing.

Yeah totally. Honestly this poll really means squat I'm afraid. Even two mixes from the same client will need different treatment (unless they are PERFECT), let alone an entire client base. I ticked all the boxes by the way.

The most time is spent trying to get a spectrally balanced presentation that is appropriate for the song. Sometimes that means more work on the bass, sometimes mids, sometimes highs, and often all bands equally as the bands work together. In other words, boosting low and highs is like cutting mids etc. Each choice impacts the next. The dynamics stuff (including level boosting) on average doesn't take as long as the EQ. Unfortunately, there's no way to really express all of this on the poll.

You forgot labeling.

Or .. "You're going to need a labeler."

... well, at least it seems like that takes the longest time.
