Big 5" API Instruments VUs here following the monitor source. 0VU = -9dBFS.

I also look at the ITU BS.1770 and CBS meters on the Orban software occasionally.

Yup. I pulled 'em out of their box and built 'em into my console. That way I didn't need to buffer and power them from scratch. I actually feed them from an additional, identical DAC so I don't really have to worry about downstream. It's also an easy way to chose from a bunch of different sources for metering using the Z-sys router.

Crookwood VU meters here. 0VU is around -10RMS on most material.

Room with a VU

Yes always VU meters, on the meter bridge of the Manley console with -4dB and -8dB pads and a phase correlation meter. In fact one of these very meters made it to the full front page of Audio Tech mag #48 for their feature on why VU meters matter. How about that.

The STC-8's digital "VU" meters can also come in handy, within a signal path.

Nice panel. Do you have a separate PPM meter or are you just using the Lavry A/D's one?

Once I get the VU's installed (and possibly the scope) I'll have to figure out if I need a PPM such as the Mytek. I have a feeling it won't be of value to me, but never say never..

I missed having VU meters on equipment so much, I started building my own.

I have analog mechanical PPM's. They are Sifam's with a driver card. I find them very useful. I like them better then the Siemans light beam PPM's and the plasma style like RTW. Watching the PPM's and the VU's gives a really good picture of what's going on. I don't have an AES/EBU meter. I only need to know if there is an over and these days who cares. The DAW is close enough.

And thanks Dave. I know I amuse myself. I'm glad it translates.
