Ribbon technology insights

I'm slowly being converted to some of the insights provided by ribbon technology.

At the Integrate trade show Daniel Weiss had his prototype $250,000 DAC running some 2 and three 3 way speakers with ribbon tweeters (I can't recall the brand). There was so much detail.

I bought some Adam A7s for home use and didn't like them at first- to me the ribbons sounded 'unnatural'. But slowly I'm beginning to hear aspects in recordings that I have not heard before, even though they are a mid range monitor. I'm still not totally convinced by the sound, however there are other benefits on offer that have become a valuable tool when listening. The technology appears to be slowly creeping into the professional world of recording/mixing.

Does anyone use speakers with ribbon tweeters for mastering? It still seems quite uncommon.

I think I've heard ribbon tweeters once or twice, and it didn't sound repulsive to me. On the Adam A7's the top end sounded hyped, but that went for better with a dip switch.

For extended times.. I don't know. It all comes down to how you, your room and the speakers go together. If ribbons give something that work for you, no reason to not use it.

I currently use Quested VS2108's, and while some could describe the 1-2k area slightly "hard", the flipside is that they have excellent dynamics there that work for me and my work translates.

I know a couple of New York (or formerly New York) mastering engineers who
work with the Legacy Audio Focus. HiFi sound.
