I have no lube secrets. On the A80 there is a fixed guide between the play head and the capstan. I haven't noticed any buildup on that guide either. Then again I'm not sure how much RMGI has been 900 or 911. I'll look through the pile.

hey bob how do you think we would go sending my can of liquid freeon into the usa ...?
probably get one of us sent to guantamo bay :)

but if you have a large film telecine transfer place in your area Bob ,you will probably find the techs still have a secret supply - hell if you take the lid of the can there is a hole in the ozone , so why not only take the lid of when you have to clean something ..?
untill its all gone then...

Thanks for the good advice from Steve and Stephen on lubricant. Last resort, of course, but it could be a help as this phenonemon in the SM 911 is aggravated by "scraping".

I bought a 1/4" reel of RMGI SM468 and it has been shedding pretty bad... it's usable if I clean the heads a lot but it's sheds waaaay worse than the Quantegy tape I'm used to.

I love the fact that I can record hot and get some really good tape compression out of this SM468 formulation though... like it doesn't distort in the way other tapes do... everything just sounds clear and compressed if I hit the tape hard.

I've been thinking about switching to the ATR tape but it's is a +10.25 operating level tape. I'm afraid I won't be able to saturate that tape due to the high operating level and I like to do that a lot when recording for a vintage sound. Can anyone here confirm if the ATR tape will still saturate like other tapes? Will I not get as much saturation as I get when using +6 tapes?

I've been using ATR on 2" and 1/4" for the last year. It sounds excellent. It does not crap out or get glassy when pushed like 499 or GP9. Just smooths things out a bit, like a more hifi 456. I can not see myself using anything but ATR ever again. Highly recommended.

Hi, IŽd like to know if the problem is solved. I used a few RMG tapes on my Tele M15 and they sound marvelous and no shed at all. the heads stay clean (knock on wood). I used both 911 and 900, and I think my machine likes the 911 better.
IŽd also like to know which machines are using the people with shed problems... Ampex?.

I can't say more in a public forum, but as long as you test any reel before using it for shed, and if there is no shed after about 5 minutes, then it will be fine "forever". Unlike the lubrication problem with old tapes, this shed is NOT one that will occur after time, the tape will either have the problem or not. And yes, they are taking steps to resolve it, that is, reduce instances of it happening or occuring.
