This is Amsterdam, man! Get him to come in, then get him stoned enough to tell the truth.

If all else fails, Darius can hide atop the climbing wall and wait for interpol to arrive.

Just be careful.

By the way - that's new to me - climbing wall limiting. I was just used to brick wall limiting!

There was a guy in my old city who screwed with the scammer for months in the local free press rag. It was hilarious. I strung one along because hi name was so funny, "Manny Gada Dudu". I asked if he was related to Gada Baga Dudu and his wife Ashi Aitah Dudu and their son Dipah Fulluh Dudu. It went on for weeks.
They are located in the Ivory Coast and they are not nice people, best to tell him you are booked solid and keep it that way. My nephew accepted a check from one in London and got prosecuted for depositing a fraudulent check.

I won't use pitch correcting software. I use "coaching" maybe you've heard of it. It keeps working even when you don't have it on.

This is a good offer! Just been through the Dam a few days ago; maybe I should have written some bad cheques to Darius and I could have saved a few bob on the Bulldog and Het Wallen :-)

On a serious note, being situated in South Africa we used to get a few of those emails a week - there being various scams such as the "advance fee", the "letter of invitation", the "overpayment refund", the "cash advance" etc.

I always answered these mails politely (you never know) and of all the potential nigerian/Burkina Faso/Congo/'Ghana clients only one turned out to not be fraudulent - and they were referals from other studios (although iirc he later stung another studio for a few k).

Soooo.. demand upfront payment via Western Union (or similar) -never cheque or wire transfer- before sending any "letters of invitation", "confirmation", or doing any work. Do not give them your address, bank account details, middle name or anything whatsoever before you hold the dough.
When they ask for any of the above without prepaying, send them a ******. That will get you off their mailing lists.

Oh, and ley me have your details so that I can do some deposits in preparation for my next trip to AMS

PS Regardless of this caveat, I do have friends who do business very successfully in Nigeria.

greets

Tim

Interesting, when I made and sold custom guitars last summer I had someone "from france" buy my most expensive guitar. He took forever to send payment saying the "bank had to clear it". When I got the check it was double the asking price so I was very suspicious. I tracked the name down on the neck to of all places Phoenix Online University, they had no idea why the check would be from them. So I went to my bank, they confirmed it was a forged check and I gave them the addresses of the "buyer".

So within an hour of recieving the check I informed the "buyer" that I gave all addresses and names he gave to me to both organizations so they can investigate. He never even tried to make up lame excuses, just disappeared and canceled his ebay account.

I had the same shitty thing selling a house and when you have the appointment done they'll tell you the need some cash to pay for travelling, maybe taxes, maybe anything. but everyone's right, they'll ask for some money first.
The worst thing is some people bite the hook.
be careful!!

Why did you inform him? Wouldn't that make catching him harder?

I doubt any addresses or names were real. He didn't even get to his precious "send me the excess back" part =(

scam/run
He was here with his girlfriend today in my studio!
really nice people, and even very cool music!

Paid me upfront, let me do my business,
he'll be back nextweek to do tweaks if necessary.

I must admit and I did to them as well, that I was a bit hesitant when he mailed me, purely based on the fact that he's Nigerian (what Ebay can do to a person...)

Luckily I couldn't see the scam? probably because there wasn't any.
and from now on I can master everything for his company!

sounds like a win/win situation, now doesn't it?

so to (almost) all of you, shame on you tutt

have a nice weekend ,

Cheers,
Mark

Based on what Zownd said, i think it's the same guy (he also mentioned he would be coming with his girlfriend)

In the end i wouldn't have had time for it so i'm glad Zownd got the job (i did 5 albums this week and numerous singles ).......it's actually heart-warming to know that he wasn't a scammer............i feel slightly bad about this now.

Here's a snippet from the last email he sent me:

"Hello Darius,

It took me 24hrs to recover from your last mail as i was really ashamed, i
do not blame you at all because i understand where you are coming from.
The world has a bad impression about we nigerians but the fact is we all
cannot be fraudsters".

Off course it's him, Darius and me both worked for the same client.
This client gave our names to Mr. Nigeria and he contacted us both.

and obviously today we talked about the incident.
I also expained to him that if you try to sell something on Marktplaats.nl (a dutch ebay kind of site) you always get Nigerian Scammer responses.
That's why I was a little hesitant too!

end of story, everybody's happy and Darius is overworked. 5 albums and numourous singles??? how do you do that? in a week?? (probably even 5 days eh?)
I did 3 :-) and the songs for Nigeria, not a bad week for the both of us.

Cheers,
Mark

Yikes guys. figures this is the only time Nigeria would come up on gearslutz.

I should probably change my location so people don't think I'm trying to rip them off...

(that and stop introducing myself as a member of the Nigerian royal family with an exciting new financial opportunity )

btw. which artists are you working with? Anyone I've heard of?

p.s. For those skeptical about working with Nigerian artists, check out this CNN report :

and look up Asa (probably our greatest export in recent days)

The Nigerian teller at my bank got scammed by the Nigerian scammers. She told them where they were exactly and told them she could easily find them and have them shot or arrested, police officer's discretion, or a cousin could take care of it, in their native language.
They haven't bothered her again.
I grew up with some Nigerians and there are plenty in Memphis, I've worked with somein NY, like everyone else, people run the gamut, but, Nigerian's I've known are either the best people you ever met (most), or ivory coast scammers.
Right now scammers are selling info through the ivory coast to the russian mob.

I spent some time in Nigeria teaching computer skills to a lot of very good natured people who looked out for me. Its kind of a shame that a small number of bad eggs have defined the outlook of the entire country.
