Got the plextor Works great but my capture puter (Dual 1.8 G5) just died! I think it's the PSU. Got another PSU to replace it with but I'm having trouble finding a torx screwdriver long enough to remove the processors (they have to both come out to get to the PSU) Had a run on things dying in the last two months like you just wouldn't believe! Any of you guys had PSU trouble with your G5's? |

The power supplies on last generation G5s are notoriously flaky. I had mine go out and did the replacement myself...one of the most difficult hardware undertakings I've ever experienced. The supply is in the bottom of the case and requires removal of EVERYTHING in the machine. If I hadn't had access to the service/repair manual, it would have been impossible. Still took me 7 hours, all told. (I could probably do it in 3-4 if I had to a second time, though.) In regards to your particular problem...getting the heatsinks off the cpus is definitely the hardest part. I had to get in from the side with some needle nose pliers, as I couldn't find a long enough screwdriver either. Very frustrating. You're almost better off moving up to a Mac Pro, as it's entirely likely that the replacement will blow shortly anyhow. In the machine I did the replacement in, it won't boot (clicks on and off again) if it's been left plugged in...I have to unplug it for up to a day, replug and start it immediately. Once it starts up it's solid. |

Verified Member | Yes and no. My Dual 2.0 G5 has been solid as a rock, no problems at all. My second DAW Dual 2.3 G5 has been getting really flaky. The symptoms are intermittent low power to USB and FW and Video ports, trouble seeing iLoks and other peripherals, and the red light on the motherboard glows on boot up. I assume it's the power supply... any ideas? Thanks - JT In the mean time I've gone back to a single DAW rig : - )

I have the same puter and the red light has always lit up both on boot and shutdown. I have yet to encounter any of the other symptoms you described though! Fixed the dual processor 1.8! Got the right size Torx screwdriver and cracked part of the handle away so that it would clear the length of the processor heatsinks. One hour later.....she boots!

Does anyone know if the Plextor Premium 2 can be installed on a Mac Pro in one of the two optical bays? Or if there is an easy to deal with USB or FW external enclosure I can put the Plextor in to use with the Mac Pro? |

I've got two premium 2's in two of those enclosures and both my G5's and my intel mac see em with no problems!

Cool, do you happen to have a direct link to the one you have? I can only seem to find ones that fit hard disks, or will those work too? |

They are getting a little more hard to find because IDE has pretty much been replaced by SATA, for both HDD's and optical's. They are around though! Look on Amazon. What you are looking for is also known as a drive caddy. You can fit a premium 2 in one of your drive bays on a mac pro. You'll need to either leave off the front two bottom mounting screws and jam it down or possibly remove the front of the tray on the actual premium 2. One or the other and not both! This will allow it to open properly, through the mac slot.
