Vari Mu > NSEQ-2 or MAQ-2NV

On the mix bus, following a Manley Vari Mu, I'm considering an NSEQ-2 or MAQ-2NV. Anyone have any ideas regarding which eq might compliment the Vari Mu more? I know it's subjective, and there are a lot of other options. But I've pretty much narrowed it down to those two.

I can try the MAQ from Mercenary, but I can't find any place that will let me buy an NSEQ-2 with an option to return it.

Thanks for any help!

Not having used a MAQ-2NV but the NSEQ-2 (F mod) complements the Vari-Mu very nicely, although in my experience I'd rarely find it necessary to EQ post Vari-mu comp at all.

I agree, most of the heavy lifting so to speak occurs pre vari - mu.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate your thoughts. That is definitely a help to me - I'm learning all the time.

I just found this great thread by Yareck:

Gyratec G14 vs. Massive Passive audio test

Yareck, if you see this, thanks very much for putting together all those tests! It is incredibly helpful to be able to hear those eqs, in all those different ways.

I found myself liking the GML the most. It's so clear and great sounding. Would the NSEQ-2 or MAQ-2NV be similar to that?

I eliminated the Massive Passive, which I had been considering. It's just too colored all the time for me. I thought the Gyraf was cool, and I can see why people like it. But for me and what I'm doing, I feel like I would never get tired of the sound of that GML.

One nice point in an NSEQ/Vari-Mu combo is that you can cover a fair amount of ground from neutral to colored depending on how you blend them. Two color pieces, or two neutral pieces, and you may paint yourself into a corner. The 2NV is reportedly pretty neutral too, but I haven't played with it myself, so I can't say if it's as nice a combo or not.

Speaking from first hand experience, the NSEQ-2 / Vari-Mu combination is outstanding.

Daily use with this exact combination for many years.

Those are great recommendations - thanks! Is there any reason I should care that the outputs are unbalanced? Does anyone know why they build it that way?

I like that the two middle bands are fully sweepable. The boost/cut potentiometers are detented. Hopefully it's possible to make very fine adjustments - I see there's a gain range switch to help with that. The hardwire bypass and bypasses on each band are cool. Nice eq!

You can order it balanced, or make the modification later. Generally speaking, unbalanced is a more minimalist approach, hence intended to be more transparent. If you have relatively short cables, no major RFI sources, and pay proper attention to grounding, it should be fine. Depending on how you integrate, you may have to take into account a 6dB loss with unbalanced operation.

On the NSEQ-2 with the Forssell upgrade board you can switch between balanced and unbalanced on the front plate.
