Massey L2007 vs Sonnox Limiter

I own the Massey but in many threads the Sonnox Limiter
is suggested for a good mastering solution. What is the real
difference? Neccesary?

not necessary per se, there just different and one suits some music better than the other. but both are great as you go-to limiter.

the massey has quite a range of sounds due to the attack and mode controls, and can create a good bite but also react very transparant. the oxford is more versatile in its controls, and i like the way it handles the bottom end, plus the gain is very nice.

i use them both, and sometimes even complimentary.

Don't know, but the sonnox limiter (native) is free when you purchase two other plugs or a bundle for the next two days. I was thinking of picking up the inflator and transmod, which would mean 3 plugins for the price of what the limiter alone normally is.

I'm not sure why people always seem on a quest for the perfect limiter. IMO, there isn't one but instead a variety can give you the best sound for each situation.

For instance, like most of us who have mastered for years, the L2 was the only one I had for years. Then a couple of years ago, inspired by some of the posts, I tried the PSP Zenon and then the Massy 2007.

The result is I now use the PSP 50 to 60% of the time and the other 2 the rest of the time. I also have the TC Brickwall Limiter (in the TC 6000) but don't find that as useful as the other 3.

I might even pick up a couple more! It's amazing when I toggle through them how they affect the tracks in different ways. So I quickly find the one that suits the track and if it has any parameters to adjust, tweak it a bit. Sometimes I find myself using the same one for an entire album and sometimes the mix and match approach works better.

The Massey is just a great all around limiter.

I like the fact that I can change the sound of the limiter based upon the music i'm working with.

It can be very L2 ish if you want it to be.

I like it and I like supporting Massey as an independent company as well!

Im gonna have to choose the sonnox, generally in safe mode. Very versatile and the addition of the enhance slider is absolutely great for some music. The margin between the two is slim, but I think the sonnox would give great results on a larger variety of music, and for me, that would be a the winning edge. But then again, someone else will say the opposite

I think Steve Massey is a great guy who cares and make great plug-ins for a great price.

I think Paul Frindle is a great guy who cares, and the Limiter he created is a great value.

I like the Massey l2007 and have used it. I think it works really well.

But put it side by side with the Sonnox and listen to the differences. To my ear, the Sonnox retains the body of the material a *little* better, and, internally is doing more clever things to reconstruct the transients peaks in extreme settings. IOW, you can get a *little* louder a *little* more cleanly with the Sonnox.

That said, I would not be unhappy if I were forced to use the Massey.

To me the L2007 is to limiters as the U87 is to microphones. It's not always the absolute best choice on any given source but it rarely sounds outright bad on anything - and when it shines, boy it shines...

Okay so I will stay with my Massey and maybe if I want to
invest many bugs for a bit someday it could be the Sonnox.
Thanks,
