You're far better off just burning a data disc with the 24bit/48k .wav (or .aiff if you're mac way inclined) and giving the mastering engineer that, rather than performing the truncation to 16bit/44k yourself, burning that as audio cd (with less error correction than a data disc, whereby it HAS to read the file 100% right)

I'd certainly be surprised if any mastering engineer out there today didn't accept data cd's and only audio ones.

No. Audio CDs are always 16bit 44.1khz. If you burn files on a data CD (CD-Rom) or DVD-R, put the audio files in a folder first otherwise some burning applictions (Toast comes to mind) will see audio files and automatically try to burn an audio CD (and convert the files in the process).

Definitely give the mastering engineer a data disc containing the 48k/24 bit audio files.
Don't burn the data CD faster than four times speed.
Wav's are more universal than AIFF's.
Most mastering engineers use either Sadie, Sequoia, Wave Lab or Pyramics.
All of these are PC based.
Even the Mac OSX stuff that I use (Sonic Studio soundBlade and PMCD) seems to run a little smoother using Wav's for both playback and capture!

Not so relevant, as for years now the dyes of most recordable discs are optimized for faster speeds. Can also depend on software/hardware compatibility & firmware.
