i found them used. i never contacted API directly, but i couldn't find them through other traditional means. i just got lucky. i'm sure API will answer your emails if you want to hold out for 550ms. however, the 5500 is easier to find and i'm sure you'll be stoked with it. remember, the 550ms only go +/- 3 db, which is fine for me but not for all applications.

So on the 500 series boxes? Which box would be the best? I heard the APIs lack power.

I'm talking about the actual box. Not the items you put in it.

I doubt that's the case. the lunchbox itself it's quite heavy. People like to talk.

Yes I think Brent Averill is the only box, 11 slots, unbeatable external power supply built like a brich s**t house with voltage to match.
TC electronic Powercore 6000
MOTU 896 HD
Brent Averill rack
This is all I ever use for mastering, it kicks ass, what it cant do the powercore 6000 will, like brickwall limiter, MD5 etc etc.
This and the new Mac book Pro => Micro mastering!

The API lacks power in the department that should you choose to add a couple of valve modules like a LaChapel or something, it could drain power from other modules that will make them not run properly. Stay away from valves and you might be OK.

Maybe I got something wrong, but all eight pots on the xpressor do have 41 steps for an easy recall...

All the best,
Dominik

You know what, you're right! But they're not very convincing. If you use one, you'll know what I mean. They're weak, and many steps are unmarked, and figuring out the setting is not the easiest. But I should clarify -- the thing is AMAZING! I use it differently on a lot of different sruff, ranging from hip hop & edm to acoustic jazz Its a secret ninja weapon IMHO of course

The Roger Shult Filters are definitely worth checking out.

I would also consider the Anamod 500 series stuff (Pultec, 660's)

Obv. you can't link the 660's, but you could set them up in M/S. Would seem easy enough to me

API 527's quite close to the 2500

The Avedis EQ's that were discontinued are another option that come to mind

Xpressor 500 is really an awesome piece of gear for the money.

Thank you very much for such a great product and continue the good work.

Wish to have Elysia 500 EQ for my BAE rack.

I'm also looking into what would be a cool lunchbox mastering set-up as well.
Only 6 slots to work with.

Slots 1-2 for EQ'ing: API 550B or JLM-PEQ500?
Slots 3-4 for CompressingL Mpressor, Vandergraph, Alta Moda Hippo?
Slots 5-6 for limiting, Program EQ or other?

What do you guys think?

I don't think a 550B would be a good choice for mastering with its 2dB steps... you would need a M version with smaller steps.
