Hedd 192 triode question

I turned on my rta the other day to look at some line noise stuff (just geeking out) and noticed something with the hedd. when i turn the triode knob i get this subsonic signal generated. it shows from about 15hz and below. if i turned it all the way fairly quickly it clipped my amplifier and made it go into fail safe mode for a few seconds.

anyone run into this before? or can anyone who has an analyzer and the hedd192 twist the triode for me and see if they see any change in that range. it was on the ad process 24 bit.

just for clarification, there was no audio running, and zero noticeable noise on the scope with the triode at zero (process still in). no trouble with pentode or tape process. the unit is brand new from the factory, and the power is fairly clean on a balanced transformer system from equitech.

thanks in advance,

k

It's normal. Luckily, I've never had an urge to use it in a mastering situation.

But try it on bass... And vocals... It can be very, very cool...

'tis true that a little bit of 'triode' goes a long way on a stereo mix...as do the other three controls...use judiciously, that's for sure!

i will give it try on vocals soon. will be tracking some in the next few days, and my client has a voice that could use a little heft, as it were...

regards,

The Triode in the HEDD is a little iffy and may have some DC offset in it. I don't use it much anyway.

I can confirm the DC offset in my unit. I too use it very little if any.

I agree with John - it's really better for tracking certain sources that could benefit from increased LF energy. When I do use it I always check for DC and usually filter LFs.

Dudes, with all due respect,
dont forget to freak out every ones in a while!

i love to blast mine on mixes; giving the head a highpassed signal, tweaking pentode & triode, then bringing the bass back up afterwards; coll on some material!

This is a mastering forum and what you are describing is music-making.

MEs don't usually freak out ones, or twos, while making music because they leave all that to musicians.

Same here!
I was actually about to post that same question when I checked out this thread.

I have to say I never really went past 2,5 on that knob, but since I discovered that big bump in the lo's I'm kind of scared to use it at all!!

Regards,

J

It's not a problem when using DC offset filter after the HEDD,

I personally do love the Triode for electronic music when you feel too much the plugs & ITB mix, it gives that texture and a bit of mud which bring life to some "cold" tracks.

I do use TRIODE frequently, despite of the increased noise floor.

I sometimes manually drive TRIODE at the beginning/end of songs, so I can get a peak noise floor of -80/-78.
