B&W 802D - how to get to the right height?

Hi there,
we're in the process of planning a new mixing room. We'll be using B&W 802D as our main monitors. As the 800 series is build for living room use, I wonder what is the best solution to lift them to the right height? What have other B&W users done to solve this?

Thanks for your help!

P.S.: Posting this in "Mastering" as I know many of you guys are using B&Ws.

tweeters on ear hight .... IMHO
and using solid marble blocks on 1 cm machine rubber plates the same size as the plates/blocks .. for hight ... but with the spikes the 800 only needs 2.5 cm for me ...
enjoy
&
happy lifting

Build a base to make em higher

For my Dunlavy SC-5 (which I no longer use) I had a base built to bring the tweeters to ear-level. It was rectangular, made of solid wood in the color of the speakers' bases (feet). That worked fine and looked great.

I have no idea if there's any premade solution for B&W speakers (stilts?), but if not, your local carpenter is waiting for your call

PS: just read Wim's post. Solid marble is probably even better.

only 2,5cm lifting? - that should be doable! I thought I need to lift them 10cm or more...

hi

i lift them about 18 cm that work best in my room but maybe not in your room try many heights and compare the analisis , and find out where it will let the bass flat as posible and then twist them to find sweep spot and nice hi freq response...
i end up with the tweeter at hear height in my room
i did spend a lot of time finding this spot (i really mean a long long time...)
one year ago i add an sub (velodyne 1200spl) and i almost get crazy to place it...they are not monitor easy to set up when you want to do real critical listening even if they sound almost good in all positions...
hope this can help

best

I made myself wooden stands filled with sand (yup, they are heavy and solid).
Between the 802's and the stands i have rubber, also between the floor and stand i have rubber.
I made 'm out of industrial wooden plating (the 244 x 122 plates they use in construction work), i also have that on the floor so it matches the floor and it looks like they are floating now.

I have tried with the tweeter at ear height but it thought it was just a bit better with mid and tweeter center at ear heigth (so tweeter just above era and mid just below ear), don't now how high the stands are tough. But i do think itt'ss bit of trial and error.

Yeah I had Sound Anchor make me some custom stands for my WATT/Puppys. They did it for a very decent price as well! thumbsup

I think you should listen to K+H 0300s with the new 0 810 sub, as it probably would do better in every way. I have a set and I would say they are less coloured than the B&W and have more headroom through the midrange, at least. The 0 410 (I haven't heard it) is supposed to be better still than the 0300s with sub. It would cost you a little less than the B&W and includes amplification which would probably cost you thousands to duplicate.
The Barefoot MM27 would probably slay the B&W, too, but be harder for you to get.

Happy New Year!

Since I own both B&W's and Barefoots I'd have to disagree with this statement. My B&W 802's (and 805's) will not be leaving my mastering room anytime soon. As for the Barefoot MM27's, they are great but they can't replace the B&W's in my book... sorry!

All this is a matter of personal taste anyway... try them for yourself and see what you like. It is the only way to really tell what will work for you... not by listening to people who don't own them (or even people like me who own both).

Good luck.

Looking at the hardware and design there is little doubt that 802 is a better speaker overall.

Looking at the K+H web document on that speaker puts me off big time due to all BS and flse claims (which unfortunately is very common among even well respected manufacurers).

The B&W speaker will handle much higher spls and that may be an important factor depending on room size and listening distance.
