What does "Error Checking" mean in CD-R Duplication?

Can anyone tell me what sort of error-checking is performed by CD-R duplicators?

I'm curious to know how sophisticated this sort of feature actually is, especially for machines that promise really fast dups. The descriptions I've found online for most of these machines are pretty vague.

CD-R duplicators, rather than replicators? Best to ask. Especially if testing at one read speed then replicating at another. Results may also depend on the firmware of their machines - at least this used to be an issue. I'd be surprised if many duplication-only places had error checking facilities. If so, it would pertain to checking of correctable and uncorrectable (CU) errors on the read of the master disc. Ideally it would also involve checking conformance to the relevant Sony/Philips book (red, orange, yellow, blue..), disc reflectivity, pit geometry & jitter, but you get that only with replicators using full Eclipse systems, and even then their pass marks ('rules') will vary.

Testing duplication masters and product (duplicas? ;-) will vary greatly - from no checking of either to the same stringent ISO guidelines often used for replication. The plant I work for does both duplication and replication, and they use the same testing for both - CD Associates, Datarius, and good ole Plextools Pro - like most of you guys use. They also build custom duplication systems for other duplicators, most of which do no testing at all. Good duplication controllers do a fair amount of rudimentary testing that is often transparent to the user.
