Bass comp at mix effecting RMS?

Is the bass the culprit when you have trouble getting a loud master, say -8 rms or more? Do you think applying a HP to the bass during mixing is better than applying a HP to the whole mix during mastering?

No, there are many more factors to this than just the bass. Bass is an important factor though sice it contains massive amounts of energy and at the same time human hearing is less sensitive to low frequencies.

Yes, but only if the bass actually needs it in the mix.

Does using shorter attack and release times with a high ratio on the bass while mixing allow for higher rms levels. And does transformer saturation help?

Yes, but much like striving for RMS for the sake of RMS, it'll sound bad.tutt

I am getting my masters to within 2dbs of the big boys and I think they sound great, just a little quieter. Could it be that the extra few dbs is coming from clipping a Lavry Gold?

It's more likely a combination of your mastering skills and the quality of the mixes you're receiving.
