hey guys. so i realize a cardinal rule of this site is to not create a new forum if your topic has been previously posted. i break this for two reasons. first i want to introduce myself. my name is sam and i am a new member of the gearslutz community. i am 19 and am just entering the marvelously complex world of music creation and production. my band (exit reason) has had the privilege of sharing the stage with acts such as jimmy eat world and paramore. music is all i love, and its all i want to do. i really want to get to know all you guys and learn as much as i can. i know...i know.... spare me the life story right? heres the deal. i recently wrote and threw up a bland mix of a new song i just recorded, and am new to the recording community. i want some opinions on what i can do to help the overall mix. anything from compressing vocals and panning guitars, to eq tricks. let me be clear. i am well aware that i am a total noob, am a small fish in a big pond, and its a rough track all around. so please save the degrading and pointless criticisms for the youtube community heres the link: SoundClick artist: The Comfortably Fallen - page with MP3 music downloads peece, sam |

not trying to be mean or nothing cause I get the sense your cool and all, but that post above isn't one that's gonna win you friends. It's a bit hard to judge the mix off of soundclick because you have all sorts of space gremlins in your upper mids due to encoding. On top of that, the sound is deathly thin, probably from encoding as well. That really fs the mix up. The way I'm hearing it in my imagination it sounds pretty good, but it also depends on what you're going for. Here's my suggestion: Track your bass (especially for the chorus because the sound is really thin there). Then post a higher resolution version of the song. Bottom line, your song has tracking questions that you are trying to answer with mixing. What that means: example: you record vocals with your senn - really gritty sound which is cool, but lacks a certain degree of detail in the vocal presence range. That's not fixable in the mix, and you might not WANT to fix it as it's taste. |

hey thanks storyville! thanks alot for the post, and i know that its a dangerous post to start out a (hopefully) long career in the gearslutz world. its just a first take of something i plan to do for a long time, which is why i decided to throw it out into the merciless world of recording forums! i will take your advice to heart, and am in the process of snagging some studio monitors (tascam vl-x5) and from there on out will cut a bass track and lay out a more reliable mix. thanks again! |
