mac digital in and outs

How good are the stock ones on the macpro and imac ?
Good enough to hook up ad/da converters ?

I am connected up with my Rosetta 200 running into the Digital ins and outs of my G5. I have had no problems. I set the Audio/Midi Digital ins/outs on the G5 to external clock to use the Rosetta's clock.
Works great!!

That sounds like a good and cheap solution. I guess you still need another interface for your monitoring, right?

They are certainly good enough. I'm using Mytek AD and DA on the optical ports and a Benchmark via USB.
