Thread Starter | Cranesong and Orpheus peak limiters
Does anyone happen to have an idea of the attack time, release time or curve characteristics of either of the peak limiters built into those devices? Any comments on using them for mastering as one stage of several? I have both, but I usually track so carefully I do not need them - but they both do the job of protecting the converters well - so now I'm thinking they might have a role in the mastering chain??? ted

Verified Member | Always off here. It's designed to interact w/ the compressor in some settings, but I hasn't worked for me yet. Dig the rest, though.

Same as above. That is, if you mean the STC-8. I don't know about the Trakkers. As good as the STC compressor is, i think no ME uses it's limiter as such (there IS a useful function for it, but that's off topic). It just seems too rough for mastering (high ratio, sharp knee ?) |

The STC-8 limiter is brutal, it can be engaged a touch when using A-Mod settings. By a touch I mean turn dial until you see PK red light just blinking then back the dial off 2 db such that it hardly blinks at all. We have Prism ADA-8XR so it may not be a perfect comparison with the Orpheus. However, we don't enable the peak limiters as we find that it sounds better if you just hit the ADCs with a few extreme peaks. The Prism seems to handle 1-2db of clipping very cleanly. |

i use the orpheus built-in-limiter while ad'ing back into the box. the more you feed them the more they start to get that slamming sound that you sometimes need (like some analog limiters). With lower levels they stay pretty inaudible.

I keep the overkillers in the Orpheus always turned off. I think they sound very bad on full program material. They are ok for controlling overs from a microphone or some other single source but I'd never have em on while running full mixes through the sound card. I didn't like the STC-8 limiter either when I tried it. Cheers! bManic |
