Thread Starter | An Audio Geek's Library Was inspired by NorseHorse's post. Decided to start a thread with all the books that are must-have's for mastering and mixing, and also some other interesting reads for the true audio geek (afraid I'm guilty). Since this is obviously not going to start as a comprehensive list, I encourage others to add their favorites or good finds (not just books, but other references like white papers). Also, I'll break it down into categories to better direct those who are interested. To keep this list manageable, please EDIT your posts if you have more to add, rather than new posts for each addition (also, it would be cool to see what's in other members' libraries). Here goes: Audio Recording / Mixing / Live Sound:
Audio Mastering:
Audio Business:
Audio Electronics:
Audio Psychology / Physiology:

| Lives for gear | Introduction to Sound Recording A good place to start, and free (if read online). Otherwise the references given further up are all excellent. Cheers, Thor

| Acoustics It's going to be quiet on Gearslutz for a while (with everybody reading). Here's a nice link on acoustics by Ethan Winer: Acoustic Treatment and Design for Recording Studios and Listening Rooms And for those willing to dive in deeply: Master Handbook of Acoustics, by F.Alton Everest. | Sound System Engineering 3rd edition, Don Davis. It's geared towards live sound reinforcement but I learned more about getting good sound at its source and avoiding acoustic anomalies than from any other source. I had the 2nd addition which is somewhat out dated technologically speaking but I'm going to get the 3rd soon. |

Verified Member | Yep. It's one of a kind. Quote:
If I could only have one book on audio it would probably be The Art of Sound Reproduction by John Watkinson. I think it covers more ground, in a highly readable fashion, than anything else I've read. DC | |

Thread Starter | Glad you brought that up, Dave and Graemme. I'm going to be returning to school this fall to get my EE degree, probably take a lot of physics classes too. Was just about to buy some related reading on Amazon. Any good book combos that anyone can suggest for someone who wants to design audio systems from the ground up (boutique gear, consoles, loudspeakers, microphones, everything...)? Specifically, I'm looking for some reading material that could help tie the physics, physiology / psychology, and engineering together nicely. Already have a few (see above)... Or, better yet, anyone willing to fund my way through college (again)? |

| Dave, Thanks for mentioning the Watkinson book - I'd forgotten about that one and I agree; it covers a lot of useful ground. The quote* "Inside every digital circuit is an analogue signal, screaming to get out" is what inspired the choice of the high-speed digital book. I've learned lots about how digital audio can misbehave from this book and a few others like it. Jordan, Nelson Pass of Pass Labs has a DIY site (Pass Labs) with several great articles on fundamentals of audio electronics. Also, diyAudio.com - audio projects by fanatics, for fanatics is a Moroccan bazaar of stimulating discussion, BS, real world audio equipment projects and interesting characters... *This quote was originally attributed to an HP engineer (name escapes me) by OMas from Sonic Studio, several years back... Best, Graemme |
