Enough complaining; here's how YOU can help the world of mastering...

So I know things can get a little intense in this forum. Sometimes it sounds like the whole world of mastering is going up in flames because of mp3s, iPods, mySpace, hip-hop, L2, young people, Rick Rubin, Metallica, false credits, picture stealing, $5-a-song mastering engineers, square waves, and general misinformation. Well, here's your chance to actually improve the world of mastering!

It's November, which means my birthday is coming up! I would LOVE a copy of Mastering Audio - The Art And The Science by Bob Katz. Is there anyone in this forum who has a copy lying around in a box or collecting dust on a shelf that they would like to donate to the cause? Remember, this isn't just a freebie, it's an investment in the future of mastering.

By the way, I guess I should mention how much I appreciate this forum. I started a location recording business one year ago, and I love what I'm doing. I've been gleaning information from this forum for the last few months, and I've even done a few trial mastering sessions. Man, I sound silly, but I suppose it'll be worth it for a book! PM me and I'll send you my address. Thanks!

Similar feelings here I realised yesterday I did my first paid mastering job for someone who wasn't a friend about a year ago - man does time fly. It's going really really well too, so Learned a lot through here - thanks to all.

I bought the first edition of Bob's book, and when the second edition came out naturally I had to have that too - I donated the first book (still lots of very useful stuff in there) to an AE friend and client who really appreciated it.

Perhaps others reading this who bought both editions might consider doing the same?

Happy birthday NorseHorse!

For your information.. macc has a Gyraf G14 lying around. I think it's being used as a doorstop. I think you would make more use of it, right? I'll pay for the shipping, and macc will include a nice power cable. How is that for a birthday present?

Call me old-fashioned, but have you guys ever heard of this really cool invention called... a library ?!? Even if they don't already have a copy, most will order one if you ask politely.

Having said that I think it's really cool that you've had some positive responses !

Actually it wasn't heavy enough, so I ripped out all the insides, threw them away and now use it for holding beer.

I can send you a beer NorseHorse...?

LIIII...BAARRRY?

Seriously though, I've checked, my local libraries don't have much in the Pro-Audio mastering section. I don't know if Dewey had a decimal for that.

Thanks to John for his kindness!

I just received a book and a DVD through InterLibraryLoan actually (unrelated topics), but this didn't seem the best situation. It'd be great to have on hand, move through at my own pace, and reference when I have issues.

I doubt I could master mastering in two weeks before I needed to return it!

...And besides, I doubt the library would appreciate me mailing their copy across the country one day when someone else on this forum has a birthday!

Wouldn't that be a cool idea? Sort of like the Stanley Cup. When someone has a birthday, you sign the copy and send it forward.

I wish I had your library. When our library system doesn't have a book (and they usually don't) they just tell you 'Sorry'.

Come to think of it, of the 30-40 libraries I've frequented in my life (I love libraries), I've never heard one offer to order a book they didn't have.

I do this annually with Tom Robbins' "Fierce Invalids Home From Hot Climates." I buy a copy, read it, sign it, and pass it on to a friend and instruct them to do the same. Great book. I've bought and passed on 5 copies to date.

I think this is a wonderful idea, not just with Bob's, but other books as well (see my other thread). I'd be willing to participate in a mailing list like this, as long as it's understood by the recipient that they would pass it on when they're finished.

One could argue that you'll help the world of mastering by actually BUYING the damn book. That way Bob is encouraged to keep up his good work. I mean it doesn't cost more than a bottle of 2005 Bordeaux, lasts longer (though not quite as tasty).

my two cents

Thank you! In a world where people's creative output is being copied, borrowed and pirated, you'd think we webboards members who are either making a living or trying to make a living from the music industry would have more understanding of the issues!

Bob has spent a lot of time writing, researching and sharing his knowledge and his book is a valuable reference tool, especially to those that are new to the mastering world.

I would like to add that Bob got much of the information for his book from this and other similar forums and email lists. In a way we already have contributed. Also the students in my mastering class are required to buy the book so I just sold about 20 copies for him.

You're welcome ...

Tom, you sound bitter. I don't think you would argue that your students owe you a percentage each time they make a buck because you taught them something. Fact is, they went out and got the gig, and did the work. Bob put the info together in a very nice package. I am sure he appreciates your endorsement...I also spec his book at Berklee. Let's not begrudge him the rewards for his labor.

Now if I could only get a piece of the royalties on those last 5000 masters.....damn.

Respectfully,

Jonathan

I definitely don't think that my students owe me anything, it was more of a tongue in cheek reference for Bob. Guess I shoulda put a smiley next to it ...

It's a great book for sure, but it doesn't make you an automatic "master" of audio by any means - all it's done is show me how much work I have left to do

Guess what book I was reading last night... (thanks John!!!!!!!)

And while I'm here, I thought some of you might be able to weigh in on this discussion I've been mulling over:

Do you normalize? Is there any benefit to normalizing? (More intelligent than it sounds...)
