mid side side effects

i was listening to a mix i really like and it seems like it was all in mono.. it still sounded big but it was in mono.. i wanted study the sides so i muted the middle and there was no reverb or delays.. it was this crazy arpeggio sound with high frequency noises.. theres no way u can hear it in the song.. i think. do u think it could be caused by the program to listen to the side audio only or do people hide stuff like that ?

If it is mono, there is nothing on the sides :P

Even if you can't easily hear something in the hole mix, it can still make a great difference. I don't think people try to hide things in a mix, but often some things are not supposed to be heard easily. That being said, maybe it was just a program error, thou it seems very unlikely...

Cheers,
Ville

Was it an mp3 or other lossy data compressed format? What you heard could well be very common artefacts of that, and once spotted you can often hear it in the full mix.

Aside from that, yeah mono can be great and many of the best records ever made are largely mono, with side elements for contrast and emphasis. After all, what appears louder - a sound coming from one speaker or two? Hence double tracking & panning rock guitars, for example, works so well.
