| Gear addict | I've got a job mastering an EP for vynal. The material is fairly busy folk/rock - lots of acoustic instruments and percussion but also a really gorgeous subby bass. In the current mix, this bottom end is really MASSIVE, smooth, really low - lots of energy under 80HZ - and actually, this works really very well for the track - there is space for it. If this was a CD master, I'd like this to remain really prominent, and this has been requested by the producer. My question is: Should I be taming this low frequency energy for a vynal master? What are the implications of a really subby master being cut? Any advice??? Many thanks |

| First things first, Make sure the low end is mono. You might want to HPF around 30hz, try it, see if the sound can handle it and remain coherent/intense. The record might have to be cut quieter as a result of the large amount of bass (to prevent needle skips), but other than that it's definitely possible to cut bass heavy records (otherwise styles such as dubstep wouldn't be possible). Speak to the person who is actually cutting the vinyl: And don't be too shy to ask for a recall if the test pressing comes back wrong. |
