spectrum analysers

I have a spare computer (windows XP) available with a small screen to build my own stand alaone spectrum analyser.

What stand alone program you would recommend??

Pinguin Audiometer: Pinguin

I've tested several software solutions, and Pinguin turned out to be the best-responding one. All other spectrum analysers looked 'weird' or delayed or simply inaccurate, but Pinguin was fast, looked 'natural' and was accurate.

How can one tell that a spectrum anal-iser is accurate?

"Natural"?

I know this is strange to describe, which is why i used the quote-signs. I can only recommend you to try several spectrum analysers out for yourself. You'll see most simply don't feel/look right, while the Pinguin does...

FWIW, the others I tried were Spectrafoo and Spectre.

I will recommend you to sell or keep your PC and buy an old mac with mac osx G4 it will do it and they going for $100 on ebay, and buy a real program spectrafoo complete made by metric halo on mac only if you do mastering, precision metering is a must in this area.

I know someone who did the same thing. His reqirement was accurate real time response. He tried numerous software and a few expensive lab type hardware boxes. The only one that felt right was the Pinguin. If you look at the site the design goal was real time metering and not all the other stuff that the other programs do.

BTW the two latest Waves updates messes with the frequency display in the PAZ analyzer.

What's the best AU analyzer out there at the moment?

maybe spectre? Audiofile Engineering - Spectre

afaik you are logic user, so can stream audio to the app via AU netsend plugin easily

I´ve spectre running on a dedicated minimac with 8" display
on my daw mac I run audiohijack which streams the audio from
the forground application (itunes, cubase, peak) to the spectre minimac over ethernet

Thanks but I'd really prefer a plug-in. It does look nice though I and did consider it some time ago.

Woah, I didn't know Peter did plug-ins. Did he program it himself?

Price $199 hm..? Is it a joke since there's no way to pay for it?

I'm testing this plugin right now – just found it in the internet.
To purchase it you have to click on the "Mark's" Logo on the plugin.

Several thoughts

I have 3 or 4 spectrum analyzers and use them a lot building hi fi equipment, and treating my rooms, etc.

1) They all work basically the same way using "buckets" and fft. The only real difference between the softwares are the features and the UI. In today's world even an old computer has plenty of cycles for real time stereo in 5 hz buckets 20-20k.

2) If there are inaccuracies they will likely be the mic or the pre.

3) The most important features are hold time, signal generators with lots of flexibility, and ways to examine things over the time domain and freq domain at the same time. A lot depends on what you do. Its also nice to be able to "record" or use real time, and use hi res playback of recorded material where you can use as manay cycles as needed to do whatever job is needed.

4) My favorite for a quick read - and its free but you have to have rme converters - is rme digicheck. Its fast, reliable, clean, and has some great features for looking at inbound bit error rates etc.

5) For general purpose, my next favorite is Pioneer Hill Spectra plus. It has lots of nice displays, lots of flex on bucketing and algorithms (blackman, hamming, etc), distortion stats, phase, time domain, etc.

All the others I have (Waves, Samplituse FFT analyser, etc) have little issues that bug me but I won't get into them. I'll use the Samplitude analyzer when I am in a Samp track and just need to check something.

My favorite is the stock spectrum analyzer that comes with Adobe Audition. Very powerful and yet very underrated except for in movie post production.

i love using audition's spectrum analyzer to check out music. is it real time? i've never really explored that part.

not really related to the thread, but if you're a winamp user you should check out a plugin called "classic spectrum analyzer". it is absolutely wonderful and now that visualization is built-in on the bento skin it fits seamlessly in the skin.
