Mastering On Genelecs

Does anybody master on 8050's or are they not considered mastering quality? I'm considering Focal Twin 6BE's also but I like the bass response on the 8050's and I'm mainly dealing with techno music.

nice thread - i've been looking forward to hear about it too, since i'll probably be working with 8050 on my next album. the place where i'm gonna work also got the sub, so i'd be glad if anyone got some tips and experiences to share.

cheers!

I have a pair of 8050's and while I use them mostly as midfields for mixing and recording I honestly can't see why you couldn't master with them. The most important factor is here that you really have to get to know the speakers and your room.

Sure if your a dedicated mastering studio there are much much better choices but one reason I chose the Genelecs myself is because I could see them work for multiple purposes. I must add though that I have a pair of B&W hi-fi speakers next to them to crosscheck and listen to aswell, wich helps.

btw. In my old studio I had a small PA setup in the liveroom to check translation of techno and dance music. I have some DIY mains now wich are usefull for that too.

I mastered an album for school on genelec 8050's. It turned up not bad but it took too long to get what I wanted.

Reason was its easy to get a general balance with them but when you want to get into detail it suddenly gets very hard at some point and realised I can't hear the details I applyed. Probably that was coused by the character of sound that genelec's have.

I haven't tryed focals but for both mix and mastering techno (for the price) its a good choice though I don't know if there are better around...

There's a ME here in Seattle that works on Genelecs.
So it can be done. Proves you can master on anything.

Regards,
Bruce

My clients think I can..
I actually prefer the 8040 over the 8050. But you need a (two) sub(s).

Hm.. May I ask what acoustic treatment was applied? I think the problem with speakers in that range is mostly not the speakers, but the acoustics in the 'studios'. Most people with Duntechs, B&ws, PMCs etc. treat their rooms differently than the average 8040-owner.

We've got a pair of Focal Twin 6 now at the post-studio I work in. Pretty good imaging but the highs seem a little harsh and there is no eq control on them. I'm going to stick with the 8050's for now and see how I feel about the Focals down the road.

The rooms was treated though I doubt professionally. Its been a while since I worked with them but here's what I remember. The bass had no problem but problem was more of the mid-high's.

I read topics in other sections as most people say when they make a mix sound good on Genelec's, usually the result isn't as good as with other references. I have to try them again now as my experience is way better than it was now.

But I remember working on them was (like) working with a very gentle deesser that was in the end of the chain. Hard to explain but I always felt the 8050 somehow changed how my mixes sound.

But this maybe coused by the room as I know this sounds funny (did I mention I was a newbie?) :)
