Becoming a mastering engineer!!

I'm not one............I don't want to become one full time......(give it a crack though)

Are you an engineer for a while, and then just think, mmmm..I'm crap at mixing but I know how to get it loud (no offence!!)?

You've noticed your better at dealing with audio, when it comes to making it loud?

Usual stuff, I know....good ear, understanding radio compression, understanding speakers of all kinds.

Just wanna know...how and why.....???

You know a mastering engineer could say the opposite; Most guys who become recording engineers are either:

1)Frustrated musicians

2)untalented musicians

3)musicians that can't hear past 16K

Perhaps 6 !

And folks who want to skip overdub faffing around?

And the "where do we start?" beginings of recording?

It's a big 'ear' exersize. bigger than recording which is more of an 'ear/soul' exersize.

Good question..

But then as a mastering studio you will be brought lovely home records that just need a little processing to sound like they were recorded in a big studio.
