I'd like to thank those who recommended the B&W 685's. They are quite bright but excellent for evaluating reverbs, and though a bit notchy from 300-600, they are very fine for everything else. I don't really need to check for noise etc. in headphones anymore...they are remarkably revealing. I added a sub, and the crossover helps pull some of their low-end overextension and THD out of them happily.

I am much more impressed with them than the Focals, and that's not even counting the price!

Yes, but he wrote under $1000, not under $20 000

Awesome! I'm glad you like them. I have not near the experience of a lot of the folks here, but I know a good speaker when I hear one and these really do kick the crap out of a lot of speakers that are 4x the cost.

When I a/b tested them against the 805s I heard a difference, but not enough of a difference to justify the price difference.

How does B&W make a great speaker so cheap and not many people know about them?

People have been talking about ProAc Studio 100's alot, mostly in mixing, but they're apparently great with expensive amplification...

Joe Gastwirt uses them for mastering as well. They are more than 1k though. And yeah, you really need a great amp to make them sing.

I've seen a lot of mastering engineers using custom mains. I imagine that you could most likely build your own monitors for under $1k. I am building a set of mixing monitors, and I'll be in them for about $500 and uncountable hours of research and labor, but they should blow much more expensive monitors out of the water.

I also have a book on designing audiophile quality amplifiers for studio applications. I guess it just boils down to how handy you are, and how much time and effort you are willing to put into it. You can build a $5,000 amplifier for a fraction of the price, but there is a lot of very delicate detail work involved, just like you can build an SSL G Series master buss compressor clone for like $400, or buy one for about $4,000.

I wouldn't expect an off-the-shelf solution to mastering monitors in that price range, though...

Madisound Speaker Components, Inc. would be a great place to start...

I have Paradigm studio 60v.3's, bought used locally for $900 and use 'em in my home (stereo and HT). If I HAD to master on $1,000 monitors, I would use those. In fact, if you could swing maybe $1200-$1400 I'd step it up to the Studio 100v.3's (unless you're in a really small room).

Make sure you check out the version 3's (v.3), not the v.2's (big difference).

This is a very old thread. But I've been let down by eBay, Gumtree, Craigslist, SOS Classifieds and GS Classifieds and as yet. Nothing.

Does anyone, by any chance, have 602 S3s they want to shift?

I'm running NS10s atm and I'm getting sick and tired.

I need something fresher.
