You might have a hard time finding a manual but I'm sure it's quite simple to use.

I think it's a very good sounding unit but lacks the headroom of a modern limiter. It's only 16bit too (I think)

I don't have the manual but i've used it for some years (quite a while ago with U-Matics).

Do you have the remote with it ?
Then i think it's pretty straight forward but if you have a specific question i can try to recall from memory...

- As i remember it has presets A and B, with the first one being the smoothest.
- Manual settings have to be set by holding one button and then pressing + or - ??
- On the back of the 19" unit there's a switch to select AES/EBU or SPdif input.

In that case it's pretty useless i'm afraid ...

You'd definitely need the remote control.
Decent sounding unit though. I used one for many years. By my understanding it was the first dedicated stereo digital limiter available. 16 bit I/O only, also word sync. Not a hard peak limiter though.. it had more of the effect of an upwards compressor, very natural and subtle when required (and its gain plots, from memory, look very similar to that of parallel compression). The irony... Last I heard Sony were junking any they had left, literally compressing them... via a garbage compactor.

A 24 bit version of the DAL is included in the Sony DPS-V77. I haven't actually ever used that program however, and the unit is a floater, so it doesn't reside in mastering. Might be interesting to try sometime.

Hi Jay,

yes, I've used that quite a bit in the past. It works, with the same Type A & B curves, but I found that on higher settings or Type A you end up needing to drastically reduce the output, unlike the original DAL.
The DPS V-77 has quite a sweet sounding, albeit menu-intensive, EQ, too. And I'd spoken to Bob K a bit about the high quality of its plate reverbs.

"Open the pod bay doors, DAL..."
