Thread Starter | Mastering without limiter
I read an old thread where a famous masterer talked about its system. He doesn't use the final limiter, adding level with analogue comp/limit>converter Prism>digital gain till sounds good. I tried once with my chain (smart>vari mu>Hedd with AD processing - Sofware PT), I wasn't particulary impressed but I'll try again... Does some of you use the same system? Some particular advices? Thanks |

I'm not sure exactly what your question is. Sometimes i use DAW clipping, sometimes a limiter, sometimes a combination of both, sometimes neither. It depends on what i'm trying to achieve, whether i'm going for maximum punch at the cost of distortion, or low distortion clean limiting (or somewhere in between). As always there are no hard and fast rules.

such a way i notice that voices and synths and any kind of chords don t really like this kind of treatment only say percussive material can work good and most of the time not even anyway try always many things and don t stick to one ,even the ugly sounding finalyser can sound nice with one special material... best regards alex

Thanks! Yes, I'm talking about Daw clipping after clipping converter and of course I agree that there are no rules but I'm curious about this technique. I deal with hard stuff so I need a good punch and high volume and sometimes I found the final limiter to be a little suffocating also with -1 db gr (usually I don't go beyond and I don't compress so much...of course it depends on the material). Usually when you reach the zero, how many db more do you set? Or simply could you describe in which way do you do this technique? Thank you

I sure do go round and round about this myself....as a home studio guy who does pseudo-mastering. My most recent project (ballad).....minimal clipping with a software limiter at a few stages, pushing a little gain through the limiter at each stage. Mother's Day
