Thread Starter | B&W 600 series...
I haven't had time to make my way to the not-so-local B&W dealer, and I wanted to get some opinions on these.
I find myself wanting to start dabbling in mastering, but overall just want a solid speaker. Do you think they'd fit the bill or should I keep saving my pennies?
According to Bob Katz since my room is so small I should avoid a full range speaker and do a 2.1 setup. My ideal would be the Nautilus 805s plus a sub, but I can wish in one hand and shit in the other...see which gets filled first.
Thanks in advance for any help.

DM605's are pretty nice... Cheap, nice sound - Great highs...
I think if you add some broadband absorption, they're not so large that they'll overpower a smaller room...

Thanks, John. I'm planning on swinging by one of the local B&W dealers to have a listen, but I've been busy moving into my new place.

I have the 805S's and won't ever go back. I don't have a sub in my room and don't need one. B&W specs are very conservative in the low end for what is actually going on down there. I'm amazed!!! And still am everyday.

I have 603's at home, and I like them, you can tune the LF roll off by plugging the port with various grades of foam they provide...very technical.
I use B&W at work, and you do need to have the room right and place them as per the manual. They are great but you might need something with tweak ability in them..PMC' of some description with active crossovers for instance. Depends on your budget.
By all means get some, and more importantly get used to them in your room...Full range and flat, whilst desirable, never really happens. No room is dead flat, And you can't hear the full range of 16Hz to 35kHz speakers. Your ears, your familiarity with you room and your speakers character are far more important.
Sorry, monitors, not speakers.

I am fond of the 700 series.
Bang for the buck kind of thing.
Discontinued, but you can find them.

If you are looking for speakers and can swing a bit more money, listen to the B&W CM1's. These are quite impressive and MUCH better than the 600 series speaker of similar size. Also, the Dynaudio X12 is another impressive little speaker.

An Audiophile was commenting a test of his comparing the 805N, 805S and 805D. There is a review at this link: B&W 805 Bookshelf Speakers Reviews
So are the 805D the best model among them?

"Back in the day" the DM602 (Series 3, specifically) were these wonderful sounding speakers. Consistent, reasonably accurate, relatively smooth, etc.
They were replaced by 685's. Ick. Felt the same about the whole line. Hyped, shallow, unnatural imaging... Seemed to be going after the home theater market.

Ditto on the 602's. I don't really care for the looks, but they have it where it counts.
I heard a pair of DM605 S2's the other day that I thought were really cool to. I also owned a pair of 805n's at one point. They were a fun speaker, but I had a lot of problems with distortion that made them a bit more difficult to work with for the "mastering" sort of stuff. I think the "s" version fixed a lot of this. Would love to get an ear on a pair of those.

I might get crucified for suggesting this, but the JBL 4328p's are surprisingly neutral. I always assumed they weren't all that great until I heard a pair. Really not bad at all, probably similarly priced secondhand compared to a pair of dm602's and a nice amp.

Now, I can live with them, WELL They're sounding a little on the soft side to my ears. I mean maybe small dip at 3-4k probably? (THAT B&W sound? That is how I hear it. If you have small room (like 10-20sq m), these will be great.
PS: I heard them with Rotel power amp (SS) and i was blown away. i must invest in one, definitely!

I used a pair of 604 S3's for years. Great sounding speakers with the right amp (and room). I ran them with a Perreaux 9000B and subs.

I have a pair of 601 S3s - okay and very pleasant to listen to. Not sure I'd say they're accurate though - they're quite flattering...

Seemed to be going after the home theater market. | That's unfortunate to hear, I bought the pair I was auditioning (686 not 685) shortly before your reply. Although I am the market they were aiming for, I am using them in my home theater setup. I was also impressed by them due to the fact I was comparing them to my JBL studio L series, which are now for sale.
I was going to make a thread for this but I will just post about it here. I have the asw610 sub with a pair of 686 bookshelfs right now. Since I have already invested into the B&W 600 series I would like to finish my 5.1 setup. I am trying to decide between what to get for my center channel and my mains.
The htm62 is priced at 395 and the htm61 is 585. I did notice more range and detail on the 61 but is the difference in quality worth the added price?
I also have the same question for the mains. Unfortunately the closest dealer did not have a pair of 683 or 685 for me to listen to (I have decided against the 684). I am wanting the best bang for the buck for my mains between the three. I hope to audition a 683 and 685 to let my ears decide, however, since I can not do so at this time, I was hoping some members on this forum could share some insight.
