Sonnex Supressor

Sonnex Supresser

I'm not the biggest fan of plug-ins but this one seems very useful. Definitely not something that can be done analog.

It's MAC only right now (And I'm PC). Has anyone tried the demo? I'd be interested in how it sounds/operates.

Noah.

i demo'd it.. its fiddly to use... but the visuals help you tune it..

its not that transparent on a whole mix.. at least for me...

LOL. its a box that says "Less/More" with a very loud grayhill switch connected to nothing.

it shuts up ppl who want me to add more "soar"
"$20 per click" i say

srsly tho.. i would love someone else to give some opinions on this plug.. maybe i just need to spend more time with it..... but it suffers alot of the problems that i dislike about plugs in general... too many options.. which gets me "out of the zen" of the moment.

Seriously? That is amazing! I've got a rack of vintage Fairchild and Gotham Lathe equipment in my suite connected to nothing... I should start using it.

It's funny, b/c I had another take on it... I really found all the controls useful. Rocked it on a mix in MS mode today, and it was pretty amazing.

I just disabled the right side in the middle of an MS chain and de-essed the center of a mix. Basically, the suppressor will show you where the sibilance is most active, so you can set the range of frequencies visually really quickly, and not be "de-essing" in any registers you don't need to be. Yes, ears are king... but can you tell me when listening to a vocal/ mix the exact top and bottom frequencies of sibilance, which may even change over time/ course of a song? This thing really lets you get specific. And you can change attack/ release times and ratios.

Plus it has some trick where it can follow RMS and de-ess to varying degrees depending on program (trace the loud/ quiet dynamic on a vocal for instance, where the threshhold shifts depending on program). Probably best on individual tracks in this mode (not mixes/ masters).

I recently tried this and Mr. Frindle's newest plug.... hate to say it, but I got more immediately pleasing results from this one, although they don't do the exact same thing anyway (apples to oranges).

I don't have a Weiss here, but I'd be interested to hear people compare the suppressor with the Weiss de-essing abilities.

it doesn't have built in mid/side settings (that i didn't see?)

or u setup your own matrix and plopped in the mono plugs?

i do all my M/S outside my DAW... so, i never think of that...
my demo still has 3days left.. im gonna play around somemore.

just did my own matrix w. 2 plugins...

I did notice some minimal artifacts so I need to play around with it more to see how invisible it is once the settings are right for each song.

In terms of "mastering caliber" analog de-essers / high frequency limiters I'd say both the Empirical Labs DerrEsser and the Maselec MDS-2 are worth checking out.

I'm definitely curious to hear more reviews of the Supresser though.

Best regards,
Steve Berson

Neither of them do what the Supresser claims it does... I own the Maselec and it's about as bear bones as it gets.

The Supresser is inherently digital. It seems to have more in common with the Weiss Dyn-EQ than a traditional De-Esser. It reminds me of an old plug-in called The Ionizer. I don't remember who made it but I tried it out in '96 and it had 512 bands of dynamic EQ. It was a premier plug-in, not real time. You could only preview about 1 minute of audio through it.

This was Hyperprism and I used for denoising pourposes on Logic 4 and PT hardware.
