K System metering and the Avocet

I know I'm in danger of embarrassing myself, but have I got this right.

The volume knob on the Avocet has numbers on it 0ff - +12 (I presume dB)

So am I right in thinking when I have set up my monitors following the instructions on Bob Katz web-site (ie my monitors yield 83dB on my pressure meter as per instructions) then this will be the 0 (zero) on the Avocet volume knob and K14 will be found at the -6dB point on the Avocet volume Knob.

Is this thinking correct?

Thanks

Correct.

Solo each channel and increase the volume until your output yields 83db SPL on your meter. The corresponding position of your Avocet volume dial will be your 0dB K20. -6dB (77db SPL) from that setting will be K14.

Thanks for that - I really appreciate your reply.

I thought I was right - but just needed to confirm it - so as not to start off on the wrong footing.

Forgot to ask

One other quick question -

If I need to drop the gain of my Klein and Hummel 0300's so that they yield 83db on my pressure meter when the Avocet is at 0db on the vol. knob.

Is it OK to just turn down the input at the back of them with their little built in attenuator until the sound meter reads 83dB

OR

Should I use the in-line XLR pads supplied with the Avocet to do this job (although I'm not sure how to adjust the XLR pads as they appear to have no calibration of their own)

Thanks

You probably don't need the attenuators. If the K&H sensitivity can be turned down comfortably to include 0 dBu through about +4 dBu (probably near the bottom of the pot) then you can use the K&H without the Avocet attenuators. If, however, the K&H are much too sensitive (the minimum sensitivity is around -10 dBu or even -20 or -30) then use the Avocet attenuators. You'll know that you have it right if you don't hear any hiss from the monitors (unless your ear is very close to them) with a digital source at any position of the Avocet control with no music playing.

By the way, in this accelerated loudness race, don't be surprised if you end up doing K-12 most of the time, which turns into around -8 or -9 on the Avocet attenuator.

Thanks for the reply Bob.

The 0300's go down to -24dB on the inputs - so I'll try that first.

I was hoping to stick to K14 and make a stand on having a bit more dynamics.

But I hear you on the K12 point.

Thanks
