some AES pics

Most of this should be of interest to the mastering folks so I've put a redundant post here:

The Museum of Sound had a booth - they have about 3 warehouses full of gear of historical interest and are trying to get a grant to open a museum of it to the public -
cool Ampex 1-track (reminds me of the Dr. Bronner "All One! All One! - We Must be All One or All None!!"):

& the latest in portable audio - the Nagra! -

Biggest & coolest surprise was seeing Burgess Macneal - one of the inventors of the parameric equalizer - and that he has restarted repairing and making the legendary Sontec & ITI eq's:

First time in the USA was Jocavi from Lisbon, Portugal showing their huge variety of their beautifully made diffusors and absorbers:

I really dug getting to talk to Rich Williams (the designer of the UA2192) and checking out his new ADC, the Burl B2 Bomber - with transformers in the analog path!:

part 2 after this post

Best regards,
Steve Berson

part 2:

In beta right now is the PSP Audioware Xenon brickwall peak limiter - according to golden eared ME Alan Silverman this is amazingly transparent - in conversation he rated it better for most tracks than the TC MD4, Voxengo Elephant or Sony Limiter. It should be released in a couple of months:

Lavry was showing their new 2 channel ADC - the "Lavry Black" AD10 - to go along with the DA10 -

From what I could hear of it on via headphones the Vintage Design CL1MK2 is a very cool comp/limiter based on the Neve 2254 but with lots of nice control and features (detented everything except for make up gain controls) - might be my next purchase -

The other comp that really has my interest in the DW Fearn VT7 -

Elysia showed their new mix compressor the Mpressor - along with the massively cool Alpha ($10g's but based on the demo seems like it is worth it) -

A much less expensive "Alpha" is Frontier Designs single fader DAW control box - looks like just what I need in a compact footprint -

Shadow Hills had a bunch of their retro look stuff there also - the new Dual Optograph which features a redesigned and enhanced optical section from their mastering compressor seemed especially cool -

Best regards,
Steve Berson

In conjunction with George Massenburg? I though that George invented parametric equalization.

Burgess & George are the co-inventors - they worked together on the first ITI parametric eq -
good info on the history can be read here -

Yeah, I was either too busy gabbing myself when I met up with folks I knew, or self conscious about taking shots of people at random that besides Burgess' portrait (which I had to get) I didn't end up with really any decent shots of people - who really are the important things at AES and not the gear.

Anyway - you should post your pics of folks here as well! I'd be very interested to see them.

As you might be able to tell from the pics I was kind of compressor shopping though, as I've been wanting another option here for a little bit - just not exactly sure the direction. The Elysia grabbed my attention but I simply can't justify the cost from a business stand point at this time. The CL1MK2 or the Fearn definitely seem worthy of demos though. And that Burl ADC has my interest as well.

Best regards,
Steve Berson

The Burl seems worth a listen for sure ... UA 2192 + better sonics. Did he tell you about the subharmonic signal coming through under the transformer cut off? The Alpha is worth it if you need what it does, which I did, no regrets at all. Another AD DA set from Grimm looks worth a listen too, Arf Alan has been on that list for some time

Did Massenburg really invent the parametric EQ?

I enjoyed your pics, Brian - looks like you had a nice vacation.

thanks all. AES is often our Anniversary time, so we made a little weekend out of it. Other stops on the way were to see my dear friend Bert Lams (California Guitar Trio) and his wife in Harrisburg, and to do some shopping in the city for Michelle! The FLW house inside is amazing, with natural AC coming up from the river and large boulders coming in the house, rain water coming in to water moss gardens - then flowing out again. I could explain things in there for an hour and not touch on all the details of his vision ... no photos allowed however. Bottom line on Frank, he was a control freak with great taste and even better ideas. thumbsup

Oh, and every single engineer of the era said it would fall down. White papers galore were given to the Kaufman's. 1936-present, guess who was Wright?

I remember seeing a segment of the FLW house on an episode of "This Old House". A recent remodel included major structural fortifications to the cantilevered rooms and patios to keep them from falling down.

The "swamp cooler" using the staircase in the center of the house was a pretty nifty idea (although it would never work here in Houston!).

the air moves all around the house with small windows in each room. In the humid summer it's a little damp for sure, but in 1936 it was pretty nifty.

That rehab is interesting, it was done in 2001 to combat sagging, and it may have been the result of the extra steel and concrete that the Kaufman's demanded, not a flawed design. After all the engineers said it would fall down there was a conflict, and FLW compromised on far less than everyone else wanted but more than he wanted, in order to get paid. We will never know if the thing would have been more stable without, as the extra weight of the additions factors in.

It's hard to be next to his work, and think he would be wrong about the supports needed. Either way 65 years is pretty good for a house built on a hill above a waterfall with giant terraces hanging off of it.

You could come to San Fran for next AES? That's a great town in the Fall especially. My lungs and throat are still cleaning out from 3 whole days in the NYC air. Ohio has coal pollution that causes pervasive allergies, but the exhaust in the City is brutal.

Is there anywhere in the US you can buy these products?
