I've mixed a fair amount of stuff for web - going with "TV levels" (whatever that means!) - but slightly hotter - has generally been the instruction. -8 or even -6 dbFS peaks usually, as it's played back on smaller speakers, it needs to be a bit louder overall than if it were on TV. RMS is generally between -15 and -18 dsFS depending on the material. but there are no rules, obviously!

cheers for that. i've been looking at a few websites with music and there doesn't seem to be much concistancy.

this is indeed true.

the stuff I was referring to was more tv-show like material, but some of it was commercial-esque and all it had was music - still went with -6 generally as the top end of levels.

if I was providing an mp3 for streaming or download I'd go with CD-levels though.
