Actually the second wave form still looked rather conservative to most modern masters, usually just 2 straight thick fat lines with no gaps at all.

I think people are coming to realise there is more to making a great master than just thinking about loudness from the word go. Well I hope so.

thanks for that interesting article.

i'm hoping that smarter recording engineers will overthrow the loudness war.

Bob Katz' book Mastering Audio (more notably the second ed) is a brilliant read on this topic!

I know this is an old thread, but I just want to say that the loudness war prevails because that's how consumers are used to hearing mainstream music nowadays.

Everything is overcompressed in commercial music, and that seems to have set some sort of standard for listeners.

If I mastered a hip-hop/rap joint and didn't compress the vocals at all, it would probably be perceived as "amateurish" since the dyanmic range is so transparent.
