Smile SRC and Dither

Hi Gearslutz,

I know we have a lot of post about this but I'm still confuse which really comes first and really need very clear understanding. It is SRC followed by Dither or Dither followed by SRC? What is the resolution(sampling rate and bit depth) of the dither noise?

Please site examples...

SRC and dither do not go together. However you should dither before converting to a lower bit depth in order to avoid noise caused by truncation.

Izotope has a good paper about dither, I'll find it and post a link.

You mean to say that i must dither first the hi-res file, let's say 32bit, and after dithering, perform the SRC to 16bit. Is that it? Then why I always hear that dithering must always be the last in the mastering process. This is reason of my confusing.

Please enlighten me and forgive my ignorance....

Do all your processing, including SRC, at longer wordlengths, and dither to 16 at the end. Some SRCs offer optional dither, and some include it as standard. Either way, perform it and other non-trivial DSP while still at higher bit depths.

Hi jayfrigo,

Ok. I have wavelab and a 32bit bit, file, when I try to reduce it to 16 bit file(for cd), I use Intern at 16bit setting with dithering noise. After rendering, the new file is still at 32bit. How can i make it a 16bit file after rendering? Saving the rendered file at 16bit?

Please advise.. Thanks.

yup thats what you need to do. after rendering the dither. you just save as and change the bit resolution to 16bit in the properties
