I just bought the MAQ-2NV. It is a great mastering eq. Befor the purchase I compared it against the Massive Passive, a pair of Tonecontrols and the IBIS!!! (a pair of Toncontrols will be my next - and hopefully last - eq purchase to complement the MAQ-2NV in mixing and tracking) |

some comments on that GR EQ can be found in this thread: best approx $3,500 analog EQ for 2 buss + mastering

Hello Bob, I´ve read this thread and I also think that the highs can be harsh or metallic on some material when you boost more than 2dB or so. But for me the MAQ-2NV was the best of the above listed eqs in cleaning up mids (which is my most importand focus in mastering) and when cutting low mids I usually don´t feel the need to boost more highs. BTW (if it matters to sb.) I find the highs much much better than the MP´s and especially the 22k in bell or shelving mode. The highs on the IBIS were a bit more pleasant but I liked the mids, the bass and the overall balance more on the MAQ-2NV. The "easy to use factor" on the MAQ-2NV was 1000 times better for me than on the non mastering IBIS (linkable, stepped in 0,5dB, clearly printed frequencys, individual band bypasses!!!) which is in the same price range. |

Just curious - did you find the knobs as hard to turn as the demo I got in early last year? Between the resistance of the pots to turn and the 'teeth' on those metal knobs, GR should ship those things with either a wrench or some hand lotion. |

yes, they are hard to turn but when you got the right technik, it can be fun because of the solid feeling. (I had the chance to practice before with my MP-2NV )The frequency choice on the IBIS was actually harder to turn... |

I have one here. Bought it after extensively using their standard eq during tracking and mixing. The MAQ-2NV is amazingly well laid out. The frequency choices are well thought out, very musical. That being said I could do with a few more in the low end but what's there works for me. The midrange is where this unit shines and I find that extremely important for a mastering eq. Lately I've been using this eq solely for cutting. There's notting wrong with boosting on this unit especially for the midrange (although compared to some eqs the highs can become a little forceful) but I think the MAQ takes on a whole new level of naturality when cutting. I can imagine that some engineers might have a problem with the Q settings but again, I find them very musical and easy to work with. Great unit, great build and a pleasure to use. I just surprised more people aren't using it. Maybe it's an acquired taste or something... By the way, does anyone have any technical infomation on the MAQ, eg. Q widths, HP dB per octave ranges, etc... I emailed greatriver themselves but got no response.

What is Q - 3dB - Dan Kennedy comes back with at least some numbers on this unit after I asked a similar question. | |

I find that even just using the gain to boost the signal has a great tone. I may eq with another unit, if I need something different in the eq character.
