Thread Starter | Any use for Genex 8500 and Sonic Solutions SSP3?? Hi. I have been offered a mastering setup that consists of a Genex 8500 with a GX8 AD and a GX8 DA. Also a Sonic Solutions SSP3 with Optic converter GGR2 I know that these are about 5-7 years old and was wondering if these are still used proffesionaly?? Or are they extremely dated like a 5.X Protools Mix+ system?? Also, what could a setup like this be worth?? The seller is asking like $10.000, which seems alot for such an old setup. Any input would be appriciated!! Thanks, Dennis

| There are still people using so called classic Sonic systems, but probably the USP versions that run on PCI cards. The SSP3 system works with NuBus cards and are really getting obsolete. Definitely more than 7 years. And remember, this system supported just a few (SCSI) disc burners; all of which aren't made anymore. If the set includes more than one card plus NoNoise option it may be worth a few hundred bucks but if you're new to Sonic and you're not planning to do sound restauration, i would't recommend it. I don't know the Genex, but you have to consider what format your clients will be bringing in. If it's only files on cdr/dvdr, i don't see use for a DSD recorder? It doesn't sound like a complete mastering setup to me, a classic editing set maybe? Peter. |

Sold for a few hundred including the No Noise. The Genex I've not used but are good from reports, although then again if you don't need DSD then $10k could go a lot further elsewhere as I'm sure you're asking, yourself.

Thread Starter | Ha, ha.!!! But yes, that´s what I thought. It´s part of a bigger buy, so I probably need to pay something for it. But is not the Genex system worth anything?? |

Verified Member | Yeah, what everyone else said! I finally moved away from my SSP and HDSP systems because they couldn't easily deal with modern file formats, and becasue they are very slow compared to modern systems. Wonderful in their day, but obsolete now... OTOH, if you want to unload the optical converter, I'd give you a few buck for it. Greg Reierson Rare Form Mastering |
