Toast 8 UB - no more Jam

Roxio have announced Toast 8. It's a Universal Binary &, more interestingly, seems to include the Jam feature-set.

Anyone used this yet? Is it workable as a PMCD prep tool?

looks promising.. the latest Jam versions have been buggy and never got along well with external audio hardware.

i've moved to Peak for my RedBook burning, which is nice.. but i'm still getting used to its differences from jam...

i don't see anything on Roxio's site about RedBook... having Jam-like capabilities is nice, but if it's not RedBook, it doesn't do us any good...

I'm pretty certain I am moving to Peak LE for my burning. Unfortunately the limitations of Peak LE compared to Peak Pro kind of bug me. Still loads more featured than Jam right enough.

Yeah it is Red Book compatible according to Roxio.

I've burnt a couple of discs with it (not just audio) and it seems to work fine. You can also insert 3 plugins on each track aswell for audio processing which you couldnt do in Jam.

Totally new GUI though. Was knd of like "why?" at first, but it is quite sleek. Incorporated some 'Apple' like interface featires too like the media browser.

One thing though, I noticed when I was testing the crossfades that I was getting a small click and slight pause when it actually changed track number. This was purely in Toast, not after the burn..... I didnt actually burn the disc, was just messing about with the app. Bizzarre.....

If you already have a copy of Toast 8, could you please check out whether it supports ISRC codes or not? I couldn´t find any info about that on the roxio website.

Thanks,
Toby

thanks for the screenshots mlehmann. It doesn't look as if the feature set has moved on much since Jam 5 which is the last version I used. Might just go with Peak from now on.

Disco..

CD Burning software with a slogan that says "We won't tell anybody what you do with it"

Hm.. maybe I'm wrong but it sounds like they're promotion music or software piracy with that kind of slogan.

Toast..

Always been pretty happy with its data burning capabilities but for audio it sucks or perhaps sucked, as they've seemed to improved upon it in version 8. I'm currently on version 7. It bugs me that from each version of Toast, e.g. 6 to 7 you can't upgrade, you always have to pay full or near full price. Pretty lame customer support too. Non-existant actually.

We've got the new Toast at the studio, I'll give it a go in the next few days.
The GUI seems changed quite a bit and I saw something abou Blue Ray somewhere.
Need to find timeeeee

The new toast is hot. Not as good as Waveburner Pro for my crossfades, but for putting out quick cd's and doing crossfades it's better than Bias Peak IMO.

Riccardo, what are you using now?

I purchased version 8 of Toast last week. It's good for creating hybrid enhanced CD (what I use it for), but not a pro audio application IMHO. I also agree with Lagerfeldt in regard to support.

We've got it for the Rec. studio. haven't had the chance to properly use it yet. Very useful all around burning application with wide formats support.
I'll have a look at the "mastering" side of things as I like to test as many things as possible as it is always good knowledge even when it turns out not to be my cup of tea.

I have been using PT HD for a while now plus other applications (Waveburner, also Peak briefly). Soon switching to either SoundBlade or PMCD as I feel the current version for both apps. is finally stable.

Well well........... two songs one after the other no pause between tracks, it clicks
Go to the crossfade editor play around , choose a crossfade, good no audible noise, go back to the main window hit play , during the transition between the songs you can hear a click.

Go back to Jam 6 point something (can't remember exactly, prob the last one they released) all works fine

Me thinks it is still a bit buggy

Still it does a lot of things besides audio CDs

I'll see if I can make it to the NY meeting for the AES next fall.

Is soundBlade really stable? I've tried their 1.1 demo & it was full of bugs what version are you referring too as being stable?

If you can hold off until audiofile engineering release their 1.3 update of WaveEditor I think you'll thank me later. I've been using 1.2 & the 1.3 beta version & I can honestly say the beta version of 1.3 is already more stable then soundBlade 1.1. It has a lot of the same features with regards to redbook authoring & even DDP export a long with object based processing (including AU plug in support). It also has MBIT+ dither & iZotope's 64bit SRC. The best part is you get all this for a great price & the support has been fantastic. I'll step off my soap box now...

Matt
